advice on opti-coat on wheels

I've read that folks have used opti coat on wheels. I have some and want to seal my new APEX EC-7s.

Any thoughts on what applicator to use? I have the applicator that comes with the opti coat (which is fine for the wheel barrels) , but wonder if there's something better to use for the spokes.

any advice?

thank you!

Just use a normal circular foam applicator and work it around the spokes. Thats how everyone does it.

a small lint free applicator or a small microsuede towel will work just fine...just make sure you clay those wheels and use a deironizer for a deep clean so that coating can adhere to the wheels as it should.

thanks for your suggestions. Didn't think about claying but that makes sense.

The micro suede will likely be a less wasteful method

Many people out there apply coatings on dirty surfaces (common practice at dealerships) and later wonder why the coating didn't last or perform as it should.

This are the best applicators for coatings you'll ever use. Soak them in all purpose after you're done so the coating doesn't cure on the towels and you can re-use them again -just a tip.

You're exactly right about that Will. The combination of the microsuede applicators I linked bellow with this applicator blocks is the best you'll ever use and it will save you on coatings.

that's the way to go SHEEDI...I recommend you to use Plasticoat on the tires. You already have the entire exterior of the car coated. It will be as low maintenance as it can possibly be.

Hey everybody, thanks for adding to this link. Good info on the plasticoat. Currently I'm using black magic tire wax. Not bad for big box store stuff, but nothing seems to last long here during rainy season. I'll check out the plasticoat when I run out.

I started my wheels (Opti-coat) , in addition to a thorough cleaning, claying them and using Sonax Full Effect to deironize. Doing the wheels one at a time so I can see how good the results are in case I need to make any adjustment. So far so good.

Full effect is not a deironizer, it's a great wheel cleaner. CarPro Iron X is a deironizer. The clay should've done a good job though..

The main thing with plasticoat is that you MUST clean the tires really good, make sure there is no silicone left on the tires so that the coating can adhere to the rubber as it should. I tested this product on my trailer tires and I've driven thru a whole lot of rain and the coating still there.
