Arrow Autobild: VED (i1 / i100) Approved for Production - M version likely

Reported on BIMMERPOST HOMEPAGE.

Some weeks ago, we brought you the news of Auto Motor and Sport reporting that the Vision Efficient Dynamics was approved for production, and BMW insider SCOTT26 could confirm this by giving away some more details on this groundbreaking concept.

In the meantime, BMW has been building up interest on this car by starting a dedicated website: www.dontblogaboutthis.com

Now, there's another report to the same effect: German Autobild reports on the progress the VED is making on its way to production. They also mention again that an M version is being evaluated. See for yourself:

At a glance:
  • VED approved for production
  • Launch in 2013
  • Name: i1 or i100
  • CF chassis
  • Electric and petrol/hybrid version available
    • 1.5l inline 3 engine with an output of 184 PS
    • Two electric motors with an output of additional 95 PS each
    • Total output: some 400 PS
  • Double Clutch Transmission
  • Both RWD and AWD available, hybrid version is AWD
  • Production at the BMW plant Landshut
  • 30,000 units within 5 years
  • Prospective performance:
    • 0-100 kph: 4s
    • 4.0l per 100 km [ 58 MPG (US)]
    • range: 400 km
  • EUR 125,000 - 175,000 (for Germany, estimated)
  • M version:
    • possibly called the M1
    • Inline 6 turbo engine (from the coming M3) or V8 (smaller) with an output of 450 PS
    • Two "Supercaps" for additional 100 PS each, boost feature
    • DCT

Nice, from reading the mags, it seems like the hybrid version will be targeting the R8 with similar pricing while the M version is going to be targeting some high rollers in the 250K range

I honestly don't even know why BMW doesn't have a super car anymore. I'm looking at an Audi R8 or a Porsche 911 for my high-end super car needs and I'll most likely get the R8 but I'd swap it any day for an M1 (or something similar).

I dont know where bmw is going.

AWD? why...I know that the 2 motors will probably power the 2 front wheels but still.who needs an hybrid
Hybrid? Give me a break 1.5 engine what?
And the price......outrageous
DCT only?
Why do we need to hear about MPG in a supercar...
This sounds more like a technological marvel....
But being honest their is nothing Motorsport about Bmw anymore. They're high tech machines thats it.

Since the X5M/X6M nothing surprises me.

i think it is a wonderful idea for BMW to make a move and create a "supercar".
They need to revive //M1; that can be a money making for BMW.

south, if these new renderings are reasonably accurate, you can see what I was referring to in the last discussion we had on this topic where I suggested the finned body panels will give way to something more conventional. The big question I had at the time was what - besides a more swoopy body - what would make this car any more special than a would-be 6 Series ActiveHybrid.

Well if the claim that it will have a CF chassis is correct, then that is the answer I was looking for. As far as I know, that is new information and it is big news if true. That would mean of course that this car is not going to use the 5/6/7 platform as the dontblogaboutthiscar tended to suggest, but instead ride on something all new and unique to the "i series". Now that definitely gets my attention. Hopefully this means we are talking about something somewhat smaller and more nimble than a 6 Series also. Obviously the CF chassis will help with weight, but size is important as well.

Unfortunately, the CF chassis also suggests this will be a very expensive car, even moreso than the 100k-ish range I previously imagined. But it is going to be a radical car for sure. If not for the high costs, it appears that this car would actually make a great M3. Perhaps in a decade or so, BMW's advancements in carbon fiber will allow more affordable cars such as the 1M and M3 or for that matter the 1 series and 3 series, to benefit from this chassis technology as well.

Having said all of that, I am still a little more excited by the prospects of a tiny Megacity-based sports car that SCOTT has hinted at recently.

lol I'd love a BMW supercar, but no way in hell would I (or I'm pretty sure anyone else for that matter) drop 250k+ for a car with "only" 450hp and basically the same engine as an M3...

Time for an R8 competitor. They need to bump those M1 engine specs though.

you're doing a straight euro to dollars conversion... but that's not how bmw sets their US prices. Instead, US prices are typically set much lower than their EU priced counterparts.

Yea I know, I realize that, but even for $200k I wouldn't do it. If they're gonna give this car 450hp I wouldn't pay a penny over 100k for it. The M6 will be ~100K and close to 600hp

m, please make it more aggressive than the ved concept. it needs to blow everything away styling wise and should sound like the LFA.

also, 500hp/350tq and 300lbs m3 csl and bring it to NA. i wouldn't mind that for 130k USD. k, bye

The possible "M1" specs sound promising! The V6 turbo + electric boost sounds like the Porsche RSR hybrid race car.

Nowhere did they say the M would be AWD if I remember correctly the original VED had an electric motor on front axel and rear axel.

My guess is the chassis would be used for not only a super efficient car but also a supercar

Basically the same engine as the ///M3? Where do you see that?

I see and inline 3 motor with 2 electric motors? Maybe this will end up in the 2018 M3, but this is really new and different for BMW...

Additionally, this car is projected to get roughly 58 miles per gallon--really impressive for a car with over 400 BHP...again, not found on the M3....

Supercar?

BMW should make a Hypercar to compete with the likes of the Veyron, SLR 722, Hennessey Venom GT, SSC Ultimate Aero.

Why? Why not. yum.

Anyways this car is going to be AWESOME. Comparable performance to an R8 and the gas mileage of a Prius. This is the future of motoring, just like SCOTT26 said.

Inline 6 turbo engine (from the coming M3) or V8 (smaller) with an output of 450 PS
Two "Supercaps" for additional 100 PS each, boost feature

I take it as 450hp + 100hp + 100hp = 650hp ?
