help! steering wheel vibration on new set of wheels

i just got a new set of wheels and new set of tires mounted on my car.
i watched them balanced the wheel+tires and watched them mount them.
but when i got to highway speed, my steering wheel vibrate pretty bad what gives? any advice?

when i got home i broke out my torque wrench and tighten the lugs a little bit and it help a tiny bit.

i don't think my axle is bent since i didn't have any vibrations on the oem wheels.
my new wheel is 18x8 so nothing extreme, tire is 245/40R18.

any advice is certainly appreciated.

I think they use hunter balance. Is it gonna make that much of a difference? The vibration is unlivable and I don't wanna mess my axle or struts.

Do you know if the wheels you purchased are hub centric? If they are not, hub centric rings may cure your vibration issues. It would also help us a lot if you let us know the brand of wheel you purchased.

Take it back, and make sure they rebalance the wheels again. If that doesn't help find a shop that does road force balance, and belive me road force balancing is worth every penny. Had the same issue, rebalanced my front wheels twice with no luck. Took it in for a road force balance, and the tech spotted the problem within a minute. One of my tires was out of round after a thousand miles. I had to replace the tire got it road force balanced and haven't had a problem ever since, so yes road force balance really works.

turns out they do have roadforce, not as fancy as i've seen in hunter website, but it's road force anyway.
and gerry was right on the money. there is some play on the mounting, so we think it's lug centric. i need the hub centric ring from tsw they said it usually comes with the wheels, but not this time for some reason. where can i get them quick??

I would contact the distributor in which you purchase them from to see if they can send some out to you. Some local wheel/tire shops may also be able to help you out.

Getting the rings on there should solve the issue. In the meantime, torquing the wheels down before setting the car back down might get them a little better centered (weight of the car won't push them off center), but it will never be perfect until you get the rings.

i received a call back from the distributor, apparently TSW didn't send the rings with the rims because they were backordered (DUH!)...
they just got some in and the distributor *thinks* he can get them tuesday from california.

gerry, thanks for the offer! if i still haven't gotten them tuesday i'll contact you.
i'm inclined to let the distributer fix the situation for free rather than spending even more money

i don't have TSW's contact number, their only phone number is to find a distributor locally. with that said, i don't know the spec for TSW wheel center bore.

i did do what ben@tirerack suggested, torque it a tad higher before the vehicle is all the way on the ground. it's a tad better, but still concerning.

try this first before you take it back to the shop: re-bolt the wheels using star formation(tightening every other bolt), and tighten each bolt slowly until tight, then torq it. it may help, had experience with vibration, and tightening the bolts right, helped.
