Bathurst 12Hr Race this weekend: BMW Fest!

The Bathurst 12 hour production car race is on this Sunday. Should be pretty interesting. Amongst the plethora of Evo VII's, WRX's and "Fordens" we have 2 x 335i's ( up against HSV and Typhoon in Class 1), 3 x 130i's ( up against Mazda 3MPS and Astra VXR), a 323i and Mini ( vs Celicas and Integras), 120i ( vs Echo,Satria and RS Impresa).

Weather forecast is for rain: Evos look unbeatable for outright victory I reckon.. Any bets on who'll win in the classes?
Here's my 2c worth:

I give the 335's no more than a 50/50 chance at Class 1. That Mountain just gobbles up torque...
I reckon the 130i's should outlast the sole 3MPS, whose driver's arms will likely dislocate from torque steer well before the finish
I think the 323 will have the Celicas' measure, but the real race in that class will be between the Mini and the Integras.
The 120i, who knows? It'll certainly outhandle the rest in it's class, so maybe that'll be enough.

Here's the website BTW: http://www.bimf.com.au/page.asp?navstr=24&Pagecat=24

Should be a nice change from the dreary Ford/Holden two horse race that is what we get served up with V8 Supercars.

Well in class 1, the No.20 335I has Paul Morris and Craig Baird who are seasoned mountain drivers. They are up against an old TE50 and a Typhoon. I'd give the 335's a 75% chance of winning the class. If it rains, the WRX's should walk away with the win.

Is it being telecast ??? If so, which channel.

I'm not optimistic for a telecast. The website lists "media partners" as 2WS - no mention of TV. If we're lucky maybe SBS will have some highlights on Speedweek? I hadn't noticed Paul Morris was driving one of the 335's. Just hope it doesn't rain so the field has half a chance aginst the Evos and Rexes....

I understand there are edited highlights on Tv next weekend. I am going there to support the concept.
The expected gun 335i driven by Morris, Baird and Holt will be driven fast as the drivers are fully experienced and depending on the amount of testing completed; on a dry track should be a favourite. However, reliability is the big question.

Geez wish I could join you. Stuck with the family Easter lunch on Sunday

If you do go, be sure to give us a rundown won't you?

Cheers

I support the concept too but can equally relate to the argument that you need similar speced cars or else slower cars become an accident waiting to happen. Huge difference in the classes of power and torque

Well the 335i's are in the top five and in the top three in this mornings practice but track conditions can change. However, the proven 130i is lurking just slightly back. Could be a dark horse.

Should be a very interesting race. Anyone know how much modification is allowed from stock specs?

No LSD for the 335 could be very bad esp if it's wet. Also, who knows how well the turbocharged engine will cope (high oil temps) over 12 hours. The N/A engines in the 130i should be fine. 50% chance? 75% chance? "To finish first, first you must finish." I eagerly await the result.

At the half way point Car 20 (335i) is in 2nd place after problems with fuel leaking or splashing out (must have a leak inside boot).
Started from pit lane and looks the fastest car and has fastest lap.
The other 335i is further back and has it appers same problem.
The 130i is about three laps down.

Well it's a pretty interesting result: at the finish, 5 of the top 8 cars are BMW's:

1st 335i (Holt/Morris/Baird)
2nd WRX STi Spec C (+1 min18sec)
3rd Evo VII
4th 335i
5th WRX STi Spec C
6th 130i
7th 130i
8th 130i
9th XR8
10th FPV F6 Typhoon

Fastest lap 335i - I lost the data but I think by about 2 sec.
Exciting race for the 335i's but the 130i's proved quite a surprise packet too...

No offence to Shiv, but somehow this victory loses most of it's gloss for me when we learn the 335's were fitted with non-stock engine management devices that liberate another 75 rwhp and 100 lb-ft of torque, plus non-stock LSD's. No doubt the Evo's and STi's were similarly enhanced ( although they already have LSD's of course). However, what all this means is that CAMs regs have again conspired to create a supposed "production car race" that is anything but.

I'm all for permitting safety related stuff like roll cages, race rubber and brake pads. I don't even mind cat-free exhausts. However I don't think a production race such as this should come down to who has the most inherently tunable car with the cleverest non-OEM engine management package tacked on.

We see just as much gains from tuning an EVO and WRX as we got with the BMW. But no doubt that the 335s had the power advantage. The disadvantage was that this was the first endurance race of the 335i and we had no definitive idea of what the weakness are heading into prep.

Shiv this is a great result for you and you deserve credit for developing equipment that works, and works damn well under duress. But I still find it disappointing that the CAMS rules mean this race is a battle of the software and permissable performance-related mods, not a true production car battle. Allowing use of an LSD that isn't even available from BMW for this car just underlines the point further.
In Australia and around the World there are plenty of race formats that permit extensive modification of vehicles, to the point where there is basically no connection with showroom cars at all. It would be nice to have had just one format that gave us some idea of how our stock cars really shape up against each other on track....

They do, it's called a club day. Go with the BMW drivers club or local car club.

This is a fantastic result and all those associated should get pats on their backs.
The decision to run the 335i appeared to be a calculated decision and thats what makes winners.Seeing as reported others dismissed the car.
I would be interested to know what caused the fuel leaks in both cars and whether it was the same problem for both.
If as stated there was no pad change then so much for the theory the brakes are too small.
