What's going on with Castrol Edge?

Hi all.

So I go to buy my usual Castrol Edge 5w30 from my usual supplier for my 335i and they say that they only have 0w30.
Not wanting to change from what I've always had in the engine I ask if they can order some in and am told that they have it but it's not Castrol.
Off to somewhere that I can see for myself on the shelf and blow me down Castrol Edge 5w30 does indeed no longer say "BMW" on the list of cars for which it is suitable. 0w30 however does.
Seems as though I have to make the change which I'm not really happy about but will do. I gather that there shouldn't be much change unless startup them is a lot colder than with the 05w30 but that at operating temperature they should be the same. Is that about right?
Also I'm not really willing to change brands or to another type (Magnatec for example) in order to get 5w30.
Just wondered about othe people's thoughts on this And whether we should be concerned in the least.
Also surprised that I haven't read any threads on this change. I can't be the only person to have run into this?

They make a few different oils in the edge lineup. The edge you want is professional ll01.

It is available in both 0w30 and 5w30.

Just go with Motul XCESS LL01, it's 5W-40 though. I'm running it right now then I'm going to send in a sample for analysis when it comes time to do a change. So far nothing bad, it is BMW approved and costs slightly more than the stuff with the BMW logo on it.

Bmw has officially changed its oil supplier to shell from castrol. That's likely the reason for the branding change on castrol product.

I don't think the Castrol Edge 5W-30 was ever BMW approved. I don't recall ever seeing their name on the package when I ran it in my 545i a few times.

being ll01 means it meets the BMW spec for long life additives. It has nothing to do if it is a supplier to the manufacturer.

I believe the UK specs LL-04 oil since the sulfur content in the fuel is lower. I can't say what happened to the Castrol Edge 5w30 over there, but here in the US the LL-01 approved Castrol Edge 0w30 became 0w40.

Now I feel like I am ahead of the game, been running Pennzoil ultra forever, which I believe is the U.S. Sold version of Shell ultra, or platinum. Lucky me!

I don't think I ever saw castrol 5w-30 being LL-01. I use the 0w-40 European formula which is ll01 approved.

Here in the US, yes. In the EU LL-04 is used for gas and diesel models.

"PROFESSIONAL" - What the hell is that supposed to mean? It's like those truck commercials "Professional Grade" Oooh - really? It's a pick up. I think the marketing people are running out of catchy adjectives.

Gents, approx three months ago BMW partnered with Shell for their fuels and oils, which is why you won't see BMW on any Castrol products anymore. I'm due for an oil change soon but as a long time Castrol user I don't know which brand I'm going to switch to. All I know is I won't be putting that crap from the dealer in my car. Suggestions?

To the best of my knowledge that crap from the dealer is their preferred oil supplier of the year in a BMW bottle whether it be Mobil 1, Castrol, Shell or whatever. I have no problem with it because it saves me the problem of chasing down BMW certified oil and in the case of one of the dealers locally its the same if not a bit cheaper than the other brands. Bottom line, BMW doesn't make oil.

Their current partner has nothing to do with LL-01 or LL-04 spec approval. If you love Castrol, then stick with Castrol. Castrol Edge 0w40 is BMW LL-01 approved and sold at Walmart for ~$22 for a 5qt jug.

LOL. I've been using the "crap" from the dealer for nearly 300,000 miles.
