Iceland's unpaved gravel road question

I'm visiting Iceland this week and will need to rent a car. Likely I will be driving on the unpaved gravel roads. In December, on these gravel roads, would I need an AWD or 4-wheel drive car? or can I get by with a 2wd economy or compact car?

I've seen videos and pics and it appears most gravel roads in the major tourist areas are packed gravel, and in winter will provide even better traction than on a paved road.

Again, I'm not talking about F roads, just the unpaved national or local roads.
