I been trying to decide with wife if we should take 330i (107k miles) or Jeep compass (37k miles) on this extensive cross country. My wife keeps saying bmw is to risky taking it on long trip like that what you guys think?

Other then coils which I all replaced recently I dont see why 330i cant. Only thing that I need to do soon is replace cooling system components cause they look little heat treated.

Mileage doesn't really matter as long as things are in good shape.

A jeep compass would not be as comfortable, but be pretty much bullet proof, so I see her point.

Ya its in great shape when I took it in for battery cable at dealer they inspected car and said its well taken care of lol I never take it in to anyone really other then diy'ing all maintenance it needs per mike miller.

My wife now has 206k on her 06 325i, other than standard maintenance, at 160k lost the starter and then just recently had to replace the camshaft sensors and some high mileage items. Still has the same water pump, injectors etc... If you are up-to-date on your maintenance, the BMW is a touring car specifically made for taking road trips, the Jeep Compass not really sure about it. If it were a Grand Cherokee it would be a complete different story...

I'd rather save the gas money and ride in a more comfortable car than do it in a compass. However your risk for a break down is probably marginally higher in the BMW...the water pump specifically. If it does break down you're looking at a fat bill and potentially never hearing the end of it. I'd probably still take the bmw. If the starter or battery dies you can push start it since its a manual. The water pump i think is your only real risk. maybe buy one and leave it in the trunk just in case.

Rule of Thumb: For all matters on which you are flexible and your wife has a clear opinion that she shared with you, adhere to her recommendation.

Your wife thinks you should take the Jeep, and you sound like you could go either way; therefore, you should take the Jeep. Whereas over the course of your remaining years together, you probably might only a few times tease her about any issues that arose from having gone with the Jeep, she, on the otherhand, will never let it go and will tease you at every available opportunity. People whom you don't know and never heard of will know that you didn't follow her guidance and so the two of you had to endure this that and the other drama as a result. Moreover, your stubbornness on the matter will get extrapolated to all sorts of other things to the point that it becomes a defining aspect of your character, regardless of whether it truly is.

If the trip is pointless for you if you don't get some fun from driving all those miles in your BMW, you may want to suggest a multi-stop flight itinerary and use rental cars when necessary. Flying also has the advantage that it'll motivate you both to pack efficiently. Clearly you have an abundance of time at your disposal, seeing as you are willing to spend 7200 miles in a car with your wife. An abundance of time is like an abundance of anything else, and a good bit of it is bound to get wasted. Were Idoing something like that, I don't know that I'd complete the trip on time, for I know exactly how I'd waste time. BMW or not, I would get bored with all that driving and would spend too much time (and incur undo risk) seeking out and stopping at public places to have sex (mainly because a quickie on a park table or at a scenic overlook is fun as all get out to me), making the trip take even longer. But that's just me...

Regarding the water pump, there is no predictive measure you can use about a pending water pump failure other than having the car scanned to see if any of the water pump codes have shown up in the ECU. My car went almost 10,000 miles between the first record of a slowed water pump (below 250 RPM pump speed) and when it failed, which was on a 100 degree day in June 2011.

Regarding the rest of the cooling system, I don't think the other components (hoses, and radiator) are as fragile as Mike Miller thinks they are. My car has 218,000 on the original components other than the T-stat and water pump. I drive my car 800 miles a week, I have no hesitation taking it anywhere. Driving a car across town, or driving it across country is exactly the same; if it has a weak component that is ready to break, it is going to break. The only issue you have is it may breakdown in an unfamiliar place, which is not an issue, as most major metropolitan areas have similar auto services with places you are no less or more familiar with than your home town area. Worst case, look into travel interruption insurance and pay a few bucks to have peace of mind if you are worried about it.

There is nothing to say if the 37K Compass will breakdown or not either. Any component on any car can break at any time. Yes as a car ages, the probability goes up, but 107K on a 330i is nothing IMO.

I personally would take the 330i over the Compass just out of the comfort factor alone.

Consider being cooped up with the wife in a Jeep Compass for 7,200 miles.... (I'm sure she is an exquisite woman as all of our wives are)
