Activating TPMS?

When I ordered my new wheels / tires from Gary with built-in TPMS sensors, he told me that I needed to get them activated by BMW.

What exactly does that mean? How could BMW activate a device that likely has no intelligence?

Has anyone done this after changing to aftermarket wheels with new TPMS sensors (not swapping with the original ones that came with the stock wheels)?

just put the wheels on and do a reset of the tpms yourself. Once you hit reset, drive a few blocks and you should be all set.

I was hoping using the reset button was all it would take.

That's why I asked the question here, it seemed odd to me to have to go back to the dealer for activation.

Thanks.

Those sensors are super sensitive. I had a tiny pin leak from a nail and sure enough, the warning light came on. Patched from the inside $10. Used the reset info from AHY..thanks.
