I wonder if its something around the gear knob area interfering. Must be a lot of electrical activity there.

It is however under the carboarded fabric cover in the boot next to the BMW bluetooth module which also gets very hot

Yeah I noticed that my bluetooth module was just as hot.

Hopefully its ok then, might check with the supplier though to be sure.

My THA555 doesn't seem to get that hot, I am only using half the power as the sub channel is not being used yet though.

If you can't work out where the noise is coming from have you tried to see if it one channel only by fading front rear and left right on the Idrive or disconnect each input cable at the amp in turn to try and see what effect it has?

In the good old days you used to filter the 12V input but in modern cars it should not be a problem, what you are describing does sound like alternator noise as it rises in pitch with the revs though

Right

I've re-routed the earth cable to the bodywork and tidied everything up - still got the interference so I'm going to ask an ICE shop to have a look.

It doesnt seem to be running as hot now though, so perhaps connecting to the negative terminal of the battery isn't so good? (The manual says dont do it!)

One thing - When the car is off, should the amp green light be on or off? Mine is on, I think I may have unplugged the wrong yellow cable (remote?) when trying to eliminate the interference!

The green light stays on until the car goes to sleep, so for around 10 mins.

You haven't got a remote wire connected have you?? You only need 12v and ground.

Also, try unplugging the sub volume control.

Behind the head unit I connected the speaker cable mass wiring.

I didn't connect the thick yellow and black cables as the + and - were dealt with in the boot.

That just left a thin red cable which didn't appear to have anything to connect to, and a thin yellow cable which did have a corresponding yellow cable to connect to - I originally connected this but then disconnected it when trying to sort out the interference.

I couldn't see any reference to this yellow cable in the manual either!!

I haven't plugged in the sub cable yet.

I will check my amp today, but as it is digital I'm sure it runs pretty cool.
gIzzE, did you check if your amp gets hot ???

Thanks

It didn't get too hot in the original position but now it is under the floor it does.
Although Blaupunkt say it can be mounted anywhere including under carpet and it is Class D so won't be a problem.

Why did you change the position in the left side of the trunk?

Because I had FM reception problems and thought it was the amp, but my car went in because the dealer thought it was a dodgy aerial amp in there, they found no fault but when it came back the reception was sorted, so maybe a loose wire?

But nicer to have it under the floor I guess as I can now use that compartment.

OK thanks, I'm a bit scared with the overheating issue of those amps (I've not installed it yet)

Blaupunkt PnP Amp question

I've recently added a Blaupunkt THA555 amp to my E92

There is a small dial on the amp that is set at zero, called input sensitivity I think. Range is from 0v-8v I think?

If I turn this up a little, the system sounds a lot more powerful - is it ok to do this?

Back in "the olden days" I remember turning the "gain" up on my other systems until I was happy with the sound - is this the same thing?

Or should I leave it at zero?

I have the THA 475 and have set the input to 8v, this setting does not alter the gain of the amp but the rate of increase of volume when you wind the volume up on the head unit

NO!!!!

Input sensitivity is exactly that, you are trying to match the output from the head unit to the input on the amp, the head unit outputs 10v I think it is, so 8v is still a little too high, but is fine. You will find that the speed sensitive volume will be more sensitive with the amp though.

Set it passed 8v to even 6v and you will cause damage.
