CBS says to change microfilter after 4500 miles since last replacement

Does CBS go by mileage, age or an internal sensor? My E90 is used only about twice a week so it gets on average 1500 miles per year. I changed the micro-filter about 3 years ago and since then I drove only 4500 miles. Now the CBS asks to change again. I checked it and it doesn't look dirty or dusty (it's hard to see though because of activated charcoal). Should I go ahead and replace again? Or is this notification not about cabin filter but about engine air filter perhaps?

Yes, it's for the cabin filter. If you think it's not dirty then I'd just reset the warning and leave it be.

Since my car is DD - I normally change out the MF 1X/yr which is around every 12K miles

I have never seen the change out reminder pop up in that amount of time, but I reset it @ change.

On your car with low miles I would simply reset the reminder & let it go for a while longer - you can always pop off the cover & check to see if it appears dirty...
