Alpine White

Hi,
Looking to get back in the saddle......
After a few years of BMW, I flirted with the enemy for a few months (Audi) and it didn't take long for me to yearn for my BMW back.

I've found a nice E91 330d that ticks all the boxes.
The only thing I am not familiar with is the colour - Alpine White.

It looks great in pictures but wondered what it's like in the real world.
I like to keep my car clean so regular washing is not a problem but is it a nice colour in the flesh?
Audi (don't shoot me down!) do 2 whites, glacier white and Ibis white.
Ibis being the standard / free paint, glacier being a pearlescent.

What is Alpine white? The freebie?

I could be wrong but i think alpine white is the freebie and a solid paint where as mineral white is a pearl colour effect. Any how still a nice colour that wouldnt put me off.

My 335i is alpine white with red leather and it's a lovely combo IMHO.

It's not putting me off by any means, just want to hear what people think.
I think it's the solid white too but wasn't sure.

I have a friend with what I believe is Alpine White and when
He's parked next to another friends A4 in Ibis White (the solid freebie), the Audi looks 'whiter' - if that makes sense!

Yea the audi ibis white is like a bright white and its a nicer colour if im honest. The alpine white almost has a hint of cream in it but on its own is not really noticable. I looked at an alpine white one when i was looking i only didnt get it as i couldnt get a good deal on it.

Alpine white is a solid paint and normally a no cost option. I've had E92's in both Alpine and Mineral. Both look good when clean, but do tend to show road dirt easily.

I didn't find white a very satisfying colour to clean, you just don't get that reward of a darker colour. But it wouldn't stop me owning another white car.

TBH having seen both in the flesh mineral white would be my choice out of the two BMW white options.

Thank you for your honesty.
Ive actually put the purchase on hold at the moment.

Although it ticks pretty much every box, there's something about it.
Maybe being an E91 there's just too much body to be white..... it kinda reminds me of a Police car!

Maybe its just me....

In E92 form White yes, for E91 I wouldn't either as they suit a darker colour much better.

Well to be fair, it depends, I agree with the above E92/3 look great in white, and the E91 maybe less so but still impressive. I think with the white, if your a modder and plan on doing performance grill and anthracite wheels, then the Alpine will look stunning. If your an OEM kinda guy then there are better colours out there. ( subjective of course)

i'm an OEM guy, nothing against mods, just not my thing.
Nothing against white cars either, i like them. In fact, in 2 or 4 door guise, they'd be in top 3 colour prefernece just not sure about Touring.

Gonna sit on it a bit in the hope that a 335d or 330d in a darker colour comes up.....
My priority is ditching the Audi ASAP so fingers crossed

Just for the record I think the E91 looks great in white. It has to be the M Sport range though as the black rear valance and inserts looks really good.

As a dedicated petrol head....

I enjoy putting a nice shine on my car. White cars, especially those with red upholstery look great.....in the showroom and immediately after a good wash and polish.

But in the UK, with its wet, dirty roads? I don't think so (for me at least). I used to live in Germany, and it was immediately noticable how much wetter and dirtier British roads are. I could drive 600 miles through Germany and Netherlands, catch the ferry and my car would still be clean. Drive the 40 miles from the ferry to my folks place and I couldn't go near the car for fear of getting filthy.

With certain colours, the dirt really doesn't show too badly and the light hitting the car causes darker and lighter areas, like burnished metal, which disguises the dirt. A white car on the other hand provides a perfect, uniform contrast medium to show up every spec. So for me at least, white (with red upholstery) looks really but is simply too impractical for our local conditions. As a colour, Alpine white was develop for Cabriolets in California and Florida, where the intense white matches perfectly with the green palm trees!

It certainly shows any dirt very quickly, but if, like me, you're happy to regularly wash the car, that's not a problem.
To me the main advantage of white is that the stone chips don't show unless you look closely.

As I said before I love my alpine white convertible, but I know what you mean by that pic looking odd. But is that a pic you took because it looks squashed to me and reminds me of a Ford Focus estate for some reason...
