Junkie’s Trip to the Strip – v4 Stage 3 / Stage 4 Results

Yeah, its not the “Strip” I first thought of either ... Viva Las Vegas, Baby!!

Background on me, what I was doing and car setup:
- I’m not a drag strip guy, I mostly do HPDE type events.
- I’ve been to the drag strip 3 times in 20+ years of driving
- As part of my testing of v4 and JB3, I wanted to add this data to my analysis
- You can see the parts listed in my signature
- I removed my passenger seat (4 base bolts, 1 seat belt bolt and 1 clip – 8 minutes)
- Tank was filled with 5 gallons of MS109 mixed with 40 range miles of Shell 91 octane
- Rear Tires – Rota SVN 18” (21lbs per wheel) with BFG Street Drag Radials (played with 25, 23, 21, 20, 19, 18 psi)
- Firmware was is the public beta firmware
- Maps for the last few runs were tweaks of the existing maps ... A little less boost taper at 6000rpm, not much of a difference in my eyes
- All launches were done in M2 mode and shifts were done at 6200-6300rpm
- Brake boosting between 2500-3000 RPM
- Engine Temp was between 220 – 240 degF at the start of each run
Intercooler was most likely heat soaked since I let the engine run as we crawl up
- First run started at around 5pm at 67 degrees (as measured via the dashboard)
- Last run was at 9:50-ish at 49 degrees (as measured via the dashboard)

The Results (60’ ... 1/8 time @1/8 trap ... ET @ 1/4 trap) - comments
- Run 1 --> 1.93 ... 8.802@90.43mph ... 12.518@118.34mph — I shifted into 3rd too soon 5200 rpm and 4th at 5800rpm
- Run 2 --> 1.99 ... 8.035@91.90mph ... 12.293@119.59mph
- Run 3 --> 1.85 ... 7.867@91.34mph ... 12.156@118.55mph – I lifted at the end due to low flyby of large owl
- Run 4 --> 1.79 ... 7.699@92.77mph ... 11.947@119.40mph
- Run 5 --> 1.80 ... 7.892@91.83mph ... 12.161@119.43mph
- Run 6 --> 1.84 ... 7.784@92.83mph ... 12.018@119.80mph
- Run 7 --> 1.86 ... 7.787@92.29mph ... 12.030@119.61mph

(I would have a had a lot more run, but two different cars blew up on the track and they had to clean it up, at least an hour was lost ... I’ll also scan slips and update the thread with pictures)

There were two very consistent points during my testing:
#1 – I’m very consistent about being inconsistent with my 60’ times (ranging from 1.79 to 1.99)
#2 – The trap speeds were very consistent whether running meth or not and with the temperature drop of nearly 20 degF (traps were always +/- .2mph from 119.6mph)

What’s Next:
- I’m NOT done with my v4 testing yet. I would like to get my 60’ consistent in the 1.7x range before moving on
- Shiv will let me borrow his Kosei wheels + Hoosiers (which are massively lighter than my Rota/BFG setup and is not that much lighter than stock wheel + RFTs)
- Once of have consistent data on v4, I’ll swap in the JB3 and test the same scenarios (ideally, I will have a dedicated session to swap back and forth the v4 and JB3 between runs)
- Will need to figure out if I should launch in 1st gear or not (which means more data needs to be collected)

Parting Comments:
- There are NOT a lot of fast cars at the track (I only saw 3 dial-ins at 11.x) and you should have heard/seen some of these trailered monsters.
- There is a lot of standing around ... A LOT. I wish there was more driving and less standing around.
- A few folks on the track asked me if I was stoked about running 11s ... Honestly, not really. I don’t know what all the excitement is about drag racing. It is not without its challenges, but I do not think “mastery” of it takes that much effort. When I flip my thoughts to HPDE, that is super exciting for me, I lose sleep at night thinking about how to get faster lap times (and power is not the only thing needed there – consistent car, consistent driver).
- I’m super excited about my trip to Munchen ... A short drive and I’ll be at the mothership. I also plan to get a ride in the Ring Taxi!!! I’ll be back in 2 weeks to continue the testing.

Thanks for reading,

Junk

Hi cn555ic,

Thanks ... Its a pretty good sleeper ... no additional cosmetic parts, stock wheels, RFTs, 2 baby seats and diaper bag in the back helps to complete the disguise.

My questions to the Drag Racing Crowd:
#1 - Are you guys launching in 1st gear?
#2 - For the 6AT folks, how high are you brake boosting at?
#3 - Are you shifting at 6200-ish rpm?
#4 - What tires and tire pressures are you using?
#5 - What else are you guys doing to get 1.6 and 1.7 60' times?

I'm sure some of this is super secret, but any help would be greatly appreciated and would save me a ton of time, so I can work on my data gathering.

Thanks,

Junk

Try "mastering" the MT...

I think it didn't seem like a big thing to hit eleven because its not a big thing in a N54. You have about six power mods that can be fitted in five hours with not much effort and combined cost less than $4000. Try cut two seconds of any other cars quarter mile time and you would see what a big thing it is to run elevens.

Updated the thread with a scan of the time slip.

Anyone else have suggestions for improvement?

Thanks,

I can understand about not being that excited about drag racing, but I think that you would have a different feeling if you had an MT.
Also, it's just like anything else...it's a challenge.

Hi Mr. 5 and GeorgiaTech ...

I concur with you both ... this is my first automatic car (out of 9) and it is boring. I will never make that mistake again, but then there was the wife who does not drive manuals.

I'll have to pick up another 335 (with an N54 in it).

Considering you can consistently hit 1.8x's 60', perhaps it actually is best to Launch in 2nd gear. How is Hotrod doing it? Whatever Launching method he's using works!!
