On a drive back from Scotland tonight my light buddy the yellow engine light popped on! Pulled over, turned the car off and on again, no light! Think it was the -7 weather there.

Hi all!

24 Lurker, now a registered newbie!

I have a deposit on a mid 2009 320i Touring SE that has only covered 4,000 miles, for a seriously great price, and was really excited about doing the deal this week and driving off in the best car I have ever owned.....until I read this thread!

It seems there are some serious flaws with the ED 320i's that I am now really worried about it enough to get my deposit back and never darken a BMW garage doors again.

But 30 pages of posts spanning 2 years are difficult to rationalise into a susinct story on the whole matter.

Can anyone help purify:
a) exactly which models, engine numbers (Nxx) and build date range is affected?
b) what are all the symptoms
c) is there an actual fix now?
d) should I really just walk away from the car all together?

Sorry for all the questions but I am considering going for a VW passat estate instead!

Thanks for your help

They can't all be bad....

You need a long test drive on varying roads (which I didn't do.. Doh!)
Set the cruise at 40mph in fifth for a while then try 50 mph in sixth.
This should show up the hesitation issue - certainly did in mine.
A constant light throttle at around 1700 - 2000 rpm is my main problem.
Also turn off the stop/start and let it idle for a couple of minutes.
It should be rock solid with no fluctuations.

If all that's okay, you should be fine, just use decent petrol.

A fix? Hmmm...
New injectors, coils, spark plugs and the software update seems to do it for most.

Good luck!!

Westy - perfect advice, I really appreciate the time you took to list it out (I know how annoying it is to retrace steps for newb sometimes!)

I am hoping it is not all of them but chat of replacement parts being on back order makes me think there are hundreds of other people who don't know about this forum having the same problems!

If anyone adds to it I am all ears. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Thanks again

you buying nearly brand new car-so it will be covered under warranty.

i would definitely steer away from new vw passat B6 chassis, built quality mach worse than B5.5 (older shape).

My 320i is running great, although my previous one soon seemed to degrade over a few months. Have you thought about the diesel 3 instead? We have a diesel passat eastate at work and the engine is strong but the handling certainly isn't bmw level.

i believe no. we have the Lambda probe(λ), the Regulating lambda probe, a Lambda Monitor sensor( post cat sensor), and ofcourse the catalyst, the nox, and a exhaust gas temperature sensor.

That is indeed a good summary.......but.....the problem in the experience of many on here (including me), as shown recently by Colsen, is that just because you don't experience these symptoms at one point in time, will not stop them developing later.....

Hi,

My E92 2.0L Petrol is 2yrs 6 months old. Hestiation just started. Took it to dealer in blind ignorance of the postings I have just read. Booked in for 2 days for software fault. 3 days later ( before software inspection) No 3 injector failed, replaced by BMW mobile repair It has not cured problem of hestiation. As it is Sunday off to the dealer on Monday armed with info on cranksensors and V29 software update. Wish me like

Exclamation Multiple Bulb failure Codes and rapid indicator

I'm a newbie here and have happily been driving my 07 320i touring for a few years when....

I Turned on the car the other day and lots of warning lights flashed on, went to go and check the codes and I have

CC-ID numers 114,116,118,119,122,125,129,133 ! 7 exterior lights and 1 fog light. Suffice to say all bulbs working

Also when I indicate left or right it 'ticks' at twice the speed as normal.

What on earth is going on?? Thanks

Is this problem still being experienced in new cars? Mine is due off the production line this month. Are people still experiencing problems with relatively new cars? and I am assuming it develops over a period of time so won't be evident in an initial test drive no matter how extensive.

Thought I was finished with all this crap with moving up to a BMW. Seems the problems just become more expensive.

well guys its been a wee while since i posted last but i thought i would update you all......

sept 09 bought new 318i se business ed
sept 09 realised the car was misfiring and running like sh1t
apr10 after many many visits to dealership and involvement of local newspaper and trading standards i got the car substituted for a 320i se business edition...no additional cost to me, car with half the miles of mine and a fresh set of alloys for my missus to kerb all over again! Good result i think and so far the replacement is good, particularly when bouncing off the red line at 7000 rpm :-)

So for anyone going through similar story as me, and there are fcukin loads i imagine, just keep hammering away at the dealer, eventually you will get what you should have had.

Incidentally, having now driven both 318 and 320 i have to say although there is a noticeable difference in power and torque i think i would be hard pushed to justify the extra £1000 or so it costs for the 320...its just not THAT much of a power gain (either that or the many software changes the 318 got made it more like the 320 possibly)

cheers guys and i hope the next post i make is to do with enjoying my car rather than fighting with a dealership!

I think my father in laws e93 is starting to show signs of this problem. I've not read through all the pages here but he told me the other week that his car had thrown up a warning on the dash and had lost power for no apparent reason. It's a 320i so informed him that I read something about it on here. Car is still under warranty so he put it in and they upgraded the software. From what you guys have said i'm waiting to see what happens next. He's had the car about 3 years but it's only done 14k miles. From reading this thread I fully expect it to go again any day now.

jamesno1 - can you PM me please. just would like to know which dealership and which local rag you used to batter them with. Just in case I need to refer to it in the future!

I am surprised you don't notice the difference in engine power - I noticed right away on a blind back to back test drive! (Why I have the 320i now)

Glad you got a good result but you were lucky (in a way) that the car was brand new when you reported the problem so there is no wiggle around for them really.

Shame it took 8 months to resolve though.

Most folk on here have had the car at least a year or two and then had problems from what I have read.
