Zaino'd two cars last weekend

Last week I Zaino'd my 328xi for the first time. Claying it was surprising not as hard as I thought. It came out Beautiful.

However afterwards I tried doing this on a black camry and no matter how much I ran the clay over the car it still felt very rough. It was getting really cold and I sealed it anyway.

It looks great, but now when you touch it it still feels sandy and gritty almost like there are water spots. Is the paint damaged on the car or is the claybar that I used not strong enough? (I used the claybar that came with the Zaino kit)

If you have etched water spots or bird poop etchings clay isn't going to remove them, since they're actual marring in the clear. Point a halogen at the car and see if you can't determine exactly what is going on; if it is etchings or serious marring you'll need to polish.

It is possible you just need a little more elbow grease on the clay.

Well I ran it over at least two times and it did not glide AT ALL.
I could never get it to glide. It always felt sticky...and I was using LOTS of lube. Almost felt as if there was a layer of tar. I didnt want to go over the car with the clay too many times in fear of marring.

I was wondering if anyone else had an experience where clay didnt seem to remove everything. Still looks great. But it feels crappy.

If I clay again will I remove all the zaino and hard work?

Yes, claying will remove anything you applied and you'd have to reapply it.

I'm not qualified to answer the rest but it sounds like the Camry is an older car and if so then perhaps it does need a polish.

Hmm, do you feel anything there with your fingers? Does it feel like an etching or perhaps some sort of sticky something or other on the surface? If it felt like a layer of tar it is possible that's what it is. If that's the case you might invest in a good chemical cleaner like Klasse AIO. That will remove the Zaino, but you can just re-zaino that area.

The entire car feels like a layer of sand is over it. and when you look very close you see small little specs of white that seem to be etched in or whatever it is. They are very small almost like a grain of salt but smaller - like dots all over the place. It's all black a 1999...paint wasn't taken care of very well. Wiping with a clean towel...the towel does not glide over...it feels rough.

I wouldn't say it feels sticky....but the best I could describe is imagine putting some dirt or sand in a bucket of water...mixing it and then throwing that over your car and letting it dry. That sandy gritty feel is how it feels even after 3 washes and claying.

What happens of you dont clay. Just wash wax and seal?

Very weird, sounds like it's either a really tough embedded contaminant, or clear coat failure. Does the paint look glossy/have luster?

When you clayed, was the clay getting dirty? If there are contaminents, the clay should start to load up with them after a couple of passes.

When you look at the paint it still glosses. As a matter of fact I can see my own reflection nicely. However there is this film...I can't explain it. I hope you guys know what I'm talking about. It feels very gritty to the hand and it has those white dots. When you look at it there is this haze over the paint.

When I pass through it with the clay... I get a lot of stuff trapped in there. The rough stuff seems to be light brown in color...

But I can't get it to glide and slip across. Maybe I need to press harder????

Not that I know much about this topic, but I have noticed that there are different types of clay... you may need a "heavy duty" one. Check out Clay Magic or Sonus. I havn't used either, so maybe others can chime in, but I do remember each having a mild and stronger version.

The white dots on black paint are the equivalent to gold dots on silver or white cars. They represent all forms of industrial fallout (aka IFO). Clay should take care of them, but this car sounds very neglected. In that case you can try stepping up to bodyshop grade clay. It's much more agressive and WILL produce marring that WILL require polishing after.
