Just looked at Alienware, they charge an extra £864 for upgrading to the Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 chip whilst I can get an entire PC for that price, including that chip from PC specialist!

I only have 2 gigs of RAM and it should be plenty. If you go with 64 bit windows you are likely to have to deal with some compatability issues, so I would keep it simple, put 2 gigs of 800MHZ RAM in and stick with 32 bit. Quote:
But .. the system you've specified so far will play pretty well on High, which is very nearly as good: |

That system includes a Blu-Ray drive as well, so you can watch HD films, although its extra to upgrade to a writing drive. So for your budget, you could spec it right up |

You should also only buy memory in matched pairs, so if you want 2 gig get a matched pair of 1 gig sticks - and don't mix brands. |

The upgrade thing isn't that much of an issue, I never really want to change my motherboard anyway and the RAM, disks and vid card are just standard models. |

Dell's are very cheap but you can't overclock the buggers due to the proprietary motherboards.

True, however I'm guessing that he won't want too since he isn't comfortable building a PC. As always its pros and cons, at the moment the pro of knowing the hardware will work well, that there is good support and its well put together is worth it to me. At other times I've been more concerned with value or raw performance and I've built....I guess these days its just not that big of a deal to me anymore
