Upgraded clutch advice

I'm getting clutch slip when running meth. It's annoying that its not all the time as I can hear a voice in the back of my head saying "just don't run meth dopey"...

But in the long run it will need sorting. I'm at 97k miles now. My dilemma is which clutch to go for to handle the power/torque whilst not costing a fortune. I'm also concerned that the DMF may need machining or replacement and want to plan ahead for this. Any experience with our DMF is most welcome.

First choice at the moment is a spec stage 2+ clutch which is £633 delivered or around £850 fitted. Does this sound about right?

I was considering ACT street clutch but apparently these wear quickly and can't handle big torque (I'm at over 500lb/ft)..

Any other options or recommendations I should consider?

Hi Phil, I've had experience with upgraded clutches so can hopefully give you some of my experiences.

I had an ACT Street clutch and it only lasted 12k before starting to slip. Others have had more out of them but I can't recommend it given my what happened to me.

I chose between the Spec stg 3+ and HPF Stg 2 and really regret not going for the Spec clutch. It seems they are holding up much better than all the other brands out at the moment. The HPF clutches are starting to weld together after hard Drag strip use.

As far as the DMF is concerned, I bought one for just over £400 from Buypartsby as they were cheaper than ECP or GSF. The original one is LUK branded which is the same as what those companies supply. I wouldn't be keen on reusing a 97k DMF considering their design and the potential for failure.

I DIY'd my clutch the second time around so give me a shout if you need any advice.

BTW one thing I hated about the ACT was that the biting point was much closer to the floor and since it is heavier than the original clutch, it was a pain in the ass. From what I've heard, the Spec has a slightly higher biting point.

I changed my clutch on my 320d at 130,000 as it was slipping due to the remap.
What I found was the DMF was the problem. It had play in it and was loose. Clutch had hardly any wear.

These DMF are a great idea but cause problems.

A solid flywheel and a good clutch will keep you smiling 😜

I've not seen anything other than lightened solid flywheels.

Lightened fly wheels tend to be noisy and chatter at idle which would drive me nuts..

Lightened flywheels are not noisy, I suspect the chatter/rattle at idle noise is the clutch.

Cars running very high torque will need a multi plate clutch which are noisy and sound like a bag of spanners at idle when disengaged, and most are a pig to drive in traffic

A uprated single plate clutch on a solid lightened flywheel should not rattle.

Bit of both, a lightened solid flywheel won't rattle itself (has nothing to rattle) but it will unmask gearbox rattles that the DMF got rid of, but these will only manifest themselves when stationary, in neutral, foot off clutch.

Phil, i'd be interested to see where you go with this....

Phil,

can you get the spec 2+ clutch in the UK?

I'm joining you on the slippy clutch club.

Did a few runs today, You were right about my video clip....

Mines only on 42k though.

If anyone is ordering a Spec clutch in the future, please PM me as I want a single mass flywheel and would be willing to split customs/shipping.

I got a quote from the uk spec distributor: Www.Garagewhifbitz.co.uk

Seem like a good company. Worth looking at a group buy?

I'm still not sure whether to get a new Oem dmf or a lightened fw..

Didn't you have a new DMF when you put in the clutch?

I heard with high hp the DMF can cause misfires. I might risk your used one if you fancy selling it?

In post 2 I mentioned that my ACT clutch failed. The DMF was put in at the same time and had a massive amount of play in it after 12k. In fact the one I have in currently is a warranty replacement for that one. I've done only 1k in it but I'm having an issue which a few other high HP 6mt's have which causes vibration under load in high gears. I could be wrong and the problem elsewhere but I have a feeling that the DMFW is causing it.

You're more than welcome to have my old FW when I get the new lightened one. Although that might be a few months depending on how busy/lazy I am.

Same here, I want to do mine sooner rather than later as I've got a track day in May and I want to fit the meth soon, but no point if the clutch is slipping already.

All these horror stories about rattles etc with solid flywheels, how did we ever manage before DMFs??

For me the solid flywheel is a better, more secure and reliable method and it gives you much better throttle response when lightened, but is the comfort trade off too much?

How rough can a straigh six be with a solid flywheel? 4 pot diesel maybe..

I can't add much here but I know Marcel (Alpina_B3_Lux) has done a fair bit of research into this area too and has an uprated clutch. It might be that he has one of the ones you guys have referred to, so could be worth dropping him a PM.

I'm thinking of going for the heavier steel version rather than the light aluminium one to retain as much comfort as possible. It is possible to raise the idle via INPA to reduce the noise at idle.

As you say, the balance of the inline 6 should mean the noise and rattling should be much less than a 4 pot.

Marcel has a HPF Stage 1 and I have the stage 2 but he has issues with the vibration in higher gears like me so might go SMF as well. His Clutchmasters one failed on the first outing to the Ring IIRC.

I had thought a traditional solid steel flywheel would be the best midway between DMF and solid lightened.

Idnan, are you talking a Spec steel flywheel then?, i've only seen light ones from them.

I would think a traditional solid FW would be relatively cheap too.

The spec steel FW is about 10.5kg and the OEM DMF is 12.5kg. Not sure if anyone makes one the same weight as the OEM.

I think that sounds like a great solution, good solid steel heavy single mass flywheel and upgraded clutch.

The shipping will be significant form the US though, have you priced it up Idnan?

Www.Garagewhifbitz.co.uk were cheaper than buying in the states, shipping and paying duty.

If there are 3 people wanting something, they may also offer some discounts...
