What would You do?

Heres the story:

My 1999 lexus rx300 has a seal problem connecting the transmission and engine so that in the winter little bits of oil may leak out because of the seal contracting a bit due to the cold. this will cost me 1300 to fix.

obviously its a terrible idea to spend that much to fix a car thats worth about 12K

im looking for another car: heres some criteria

Good rear leg room, no need for 7+ seats

AWD

good fuel economy

Comfortable

Safe

no wagens

Not american

<40K used or new

good sized cargo capacity for hauling items such as bagged mulch or suitcases

larger interior over the 3 series

Auto transmission

i have been looking at

RDX
A6 used
A4
X3
5 series used
Highlander
Pilot
C300 sport 4matic
VW tiguan
Murano
Rogue

What ive test driven

X3
A6
A4
525Xi
C300 sport 4 matic
Phaeton

Which car would you buy? cars not on this list are appreciated as well Please advise.

i know im working with many cars, sedans, suvs, crossovers

Thanks!!!!!!

Hyundai Veracruz is another option.

I've test driven it and it was quite impressive.

why no wagons? I have the 328XiT. I have NO complaints. It handles like a 3 series (because it is) it handles larger cargo than a 3 series. It is not that high in the sky feel of any of the SUV's. It is not american. What is your hang up with wagons? Afterall, the RX300 you have is a wagon. Just a tall one.

I would look at the new Toyota 4runner. You can get one new loaded up with everything for around 38 or even cheaper.

My wife didn't want a wagon either, now she never lets me drive it LOL. She said she may keep it forever. So, take your wife to test drive one. She may change her mind.

Are you completely against the idea of getting a used RX350 or RX330? I have to admit they aren't the greatest/thrilling car to drive...but they get the job done. Plus quite a few improvements in the newer RX's.

My dad has a 2007 RX350 (just bought it last year) with 100,000 km on it. He's been doing quite a bit of driving with it. Heh. Still going strong...

Kit523, why is your license plate bracket off to the side? I know the EVOs do it to prevent the blockage of air to the intercooler but the 335i doesn't have that problem?

I think you should run the numbers again - it would be a terrible idea to buy a $40,000 car instead of getting the tranny fixed for $1,300. Even with your trade-in, you're going to be paying $500+/month (assuming a 60 month loan), so you essentially recoup your repair bill in 2-3 months. Don't compare the repair cost to the value of the car, compare the repair cost to the price of replacing your old car's functionality ...

Thumbs up +1 I am with you on that. 1300 is not that much. Smart money says fix it.

Imagine the flipside scenario: you just spent 40K on a used lexus ls and now you have to spend 1300 b/c it's out of warranty. Wouldn't you fix it? Of course you would! I used to give up just like you're about to. Doesn't make sense. Just fix it. Look at the bright side, you spent 1300 for a car that's already paid for.
Since you hate wagons or is it the wife who does? Anyway, Toyota (Lexus) vehicles are solid. If you want another SUV, take a look at the 4WD Toyota RAV 4 V6 Sport. Its got the same powertrain as the Rx 350, in a lighter package. It really scoots for an SUV. I like it, and thats saying alot as I have a Dinan tuned 335i coupe. But for almost identical space and utility as the Lexus (RAV 4 is way faster BTW), you pay a bundle less. Its even faster than the 4Runner by a good margin. Its big inside even though it doesn't look like it from outside, handles well and wont leave you wanting. I am completely satisfied with mine. I use it as my DD especially in winter, and use the 335 for long trips so I can really stretch its legs and make the trip fun too. Gotta love that boost!

I agree. Fix it. Even if you decide to sell it you're going to loose the $1300 in resale value. Patch that baby up and keep rolling.
