Arrow How soon I should be doing a tire change

I was wondering if there is any specific limit with miles after which I need to replace the tires? Currently I am running run flats and I have about 30,000 miles on them. When should I change the tires?
And everyone's suggestion being to go with PSS. I think I will go with PSS.

I've never heard of a specific time-based tire change recommendation; pretty much only replace due to tread wear or dry-rot.

Tires wear out when they wear out. How and where you drive and whether or not you rotate the tires will greatly effect tire wear. High speed cornering and "burnouts" will greatly accelerate wear. It is generaly accepted that, if you drive the car very little, so that the tires do not "wear out" that they be replaced every 5-7 years. Here is a link to an article by Tire Rack on the "life" of tires.

That 5 year rule is known to me too...

Apperently the tire compound will get hard after this time and you will not have same grip level...

Tread depth. Depends if you live in a state with inspections, if you don't it depends on how comfortable you are with the remaining tread.

Personally I don't like to wait until they're "barely legal" - that's 2/32" here and that's pretty marginal in the rain and lord help you if it snows. Had a little go-round with the fleet people at work about that. Now I'm in a position where I don't have a company car anymore so I've decided to roll the money that was going to personal use on the old company car into more acceptable transportation, and I get to maintain it how I see fit

I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet. If you look at the physical tire itself, you'll see a rectangular indentation connecting between the treads. This is the wear marker.

When the thickness of the surrounding tread reaches the same level as the wear marker, you should plan for a tire change.

If your car is lowered and there's some sort of camber, if you corner a lot, or if your wheels are misaligned, also inspect the inner and outer edges of the tire treads. If these have worn down and look 'bald', it's way past time to change the tire, even if the center treads haven't reached the wear marker yet.

Thank you all for the input. I will consider all the above information before changing the tires.

2 years is a joke right. Just replaced this week the tires on a 2000 528i, bought it used in the summer of 2011 with 24,000 original miles a nd replaced the tires this week with 47,000 miles on them.

To early... Even if i do change them every 2 years, i do it because the thread is down and not "just" because they are 2 years old...

Brake fluid is suggested by BMW every 3 years... Would do it earlier if i drive track sometimes...

wow... you guys are crazy.

I got 82k out of my stock runflats. Granted they rode like shit (they rode like shit new too), I got my money's worth from them.

Now on a winter / summer alternating wheel setup.

Since you have the ZSP, 30k miles is quite a bit of milege on the OEM tires as most folks seem to get only about 15 to 25k, especially on the rears. So I strongly suggest you purchase a tread depth gauge and measure each tire yourself at a number of different spots. Legally, you need to replace them when below 2/32" (wear bars), but you will be much safer replacing them at 3 or even 4/32".

I got 50,000 miles out of my Michelin PS2 Runflats from the factory. This was only for the front pair. I say you still got a while to go.

The rears were another story. Went through 3 sets before having to replace front.

It totally depends on wear, but if they're bald then i'd replace them.

I would look at Kumho Ecstas 4X - They are the only tire I could fine that had a treadwear rating of over 400 and AA traction.

I had them on my 2003 530i and they were freaking amazing. Quiet as heck and gripped the road as good as a Continental DW. (Had the DW's on the car. Good tires but louder than the kumho's and the wear sucked.)

I'll be putting them on my 335 when I need new tires.

Tread wear can only be compared within a brand. It doesn't mean much if you compare 2 different brands.

All wear n tear. I put 10k on my stock rfts which had a few k on them before I bought it the tread still looks new. But I do have winter tires which does reduce how frequently I purchase tires.
