Summer tires

Hi,

Anyone know where to get the following in the GTA/York region? Most places seem out of stock.

2x Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT 225/35R19 88Y
2x Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT 255/30R19 91Y

Any comparable alternatives that are in stock these days?

Thx.

Do yourself a favour and switch to Michelin Pilot Supersports. They are available in the same size and with the same speed rating. Go to none runflat tires and by a limp kit. It transforms the car, you get a much better tire and you end up saving money.

That's what I did, no regrets at all, well worth it.

Although comfort is slightly compromised with run flat tires, safety is significantly increased over the conventional tire.

Not to mention convenience aspect of run flats when you do get a puncture.

So maybe OP is riding with kids in the car and doesn't want to think about getting stranded or losing control of the car.

I had those tires on my stock 193M wheels and they were absolute trash. Ended up switching to DWS on those wheels for winter and have never looked back. I'll hit on two points that was brought up above -->
Stranded with kids - get CAA or a tire repair kit. I have had both my kids in my car and have never felt unsafe. I actually feel safer in the non RFT options.
Losing control of the car - runflats are actually worse when compared to any other option, be it DZ102, PSS, Conti DWS etc. I speak from my personal experience and have driven on the above stated tires. At the end of the day, your vehicle, your choice.

In 20 years and close to a million km I've only had ONE situation where a tire pressure warning light and pump wouldn't have been enough to save the trip, or at least limp home.

Big cylindrical piece of metal got stuck in the tire. Made a bunch of noise while driving. Inspected it when stopped a few minutes later. I SHOULD have driven home slowly, but got on the highway and it got thrown. Tire went flat in seconds.

Otherwise, it's been a slow leak here or there, a nail, screw from the construction site etc. Pump it up, get it home, find it, patch it, life goes on.

I've had several flats over my driving career and never regretted switching to none RFT on all of my 3 E9X's. If I have a flat in town I use a tow truck because 9/10 times they can repair the tire and when I'm out of town I use a limp kit (tire can't be repaired). As stated above handling is a million times better and in my book that also means increased safety. Also have to remember that runflats cannot be repaired, so if you have a flat half way through the lifetime of your tire, you will technically have to replace two tires.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to get some non RFT tires and a kit.

Was originally leaning towards sticking with RFTs for wife's convenience when she takes the car while I'm out of town on business.

What brand / kind of limp kit? I have run flats in the summer but will be switching out of them for non runflats and I run non runflats in the winter, but short distances so never worried about getting a limp kit until now.

I have the BMW mobility kit, you can get it at any BMW dealer. If you don't want to spend a bunch extra just to have the BMW logo on it you can buy any similar kit from Canadian tire. Here's what the BMW kit looks like:

I'd highly recommend switching to the Michelin Pilot Super Sports if you also use winter tires, or Michelin Pilot A/S 3 if you don't. Both tires are significantly better than the RE050A RFTs in every area.

I carry a small bottle of slime and a full tire patch kit (and tools) in my 335i as well as a CAA membership. I'm not sure that I would want to patch a tire at the side of the road, but I have done it once on my other car (for practice) and I'm sure I could do it in a parking lot in 30 minutes if required.

Since run flats do not guarantee that you'll be able to drive home either, I believe this combination is just as safe. And the car drives and handles considerably better on the non-RFT Michelins.

How often have you seen car with brand new tires having problems?

US$126 for a glorified 12V air compressor and pressure gauge? A steep premium for the BMW label.

Personally, I carry the following:
- dedicated 17" steel rim spare with a 205/50/17 tire (OE diameter)
- breaker bar
- manual jack
- bicycle pump
- plug repair kit

Total cost is just a bit more than the BMW mobility kit.

I use a dedicated steel rim as a spare rather than one of my 18" OEM alloy rims because it's 10lbs lighter, plus it's the smallest sized tire that is still OE diameter. With the lighter rim/tire, it's less of a chore when I need trunk space and have to pull it from the trunk.

As I said .. no need to get it from BMW, Canadian tire has equal ones for much less.
But I find carrying a spare in a car that isn't designed to have one a bit extreme.. but to each their own.

All these flat tire stories are scaring me, anyone has one spare 18" with rim that can sell me?

I switched to summer performance last year for my 335d.

CAA and a quality car tire inflator is all one really needs if you live in the city. A spare tire doesn't hurt either.

This is the best tire inflator I've ever used and I can't recommend it enough!
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mo...5026p.html#srp

It inflates very quickly and has an auto shut-off once it reaches your desired PSI. It also has an adapter for bicycle tires, a LED light built-in that shines towards the sides, and a warning LED triangle light as well. Extremely handy in all aspects.

Take a look at Continential Extreme ContactSport. There is a $65 rebate for them as well. http://www.continentaltirepromotions.ca/

These are the replacements for the Continental Extreme Contact DW.

I just put them on a few weeks ago from Tires23.

Very pleased with them. $400 cheaper than the M Pilot Sport 4S (note: there is also a $75 rebate on the MPS)

I agree, the Firestone firehawks were out of stock so I decided to go with continental extreme contact sport plus, the latest and successor of the 8 year running dws. I am more then happy and it's suppose to last 50,000 km. Obviously that depends on driving habits but I'm a happy camper
