Metal Clashing sound with AR DP on Cold Start

Hi All,

I have some questions as I just had an AR Catted DP installed on my E90 and noticed some changes.

I noticed that on cold starts, especially the first start of the day, I would hear a metal clashing sound the moment I start my engine that lasts for a few seconds.
If I start it turn my car off and start it again, it does the clashing sound again (not always), but for only like one second.
When the car is still warm and I start the engine, usually there's no metal sound, but sometimes there's still a hint of that metal clapping sound.
Also, sometimes, when I accelerate and rev the engine slowly, I would hear this faint metal vibration that I did not observe before installing the DP. Maybe the stock DP covered up this noise.

I'll take a video of this tomorrow morning, but in the meantime, is this normal for a DP? Or will this be a potential problem?

Thanks for your feedback!

Probably the DPs touching each other or the subframe. Jack it up and check spacing between everything.

The downpipes are either hitting the subframe or you're experiencing wastegate rattle.

My money is on wastegate rattle.

i got my ar dps put on last week, and on a cold start notice a tractor type flapping noise, apparently this is just the wastegates once the car warms up its fine. Nothing to worry about pretty much, just because yo no longer have cats means you can start hearing noises you never used to hear!

Well, I still have my stock exhausts and the DP is catted.

The noise you're hearing is from the front of the car, not the rear

The OEM downpipes are double wall insulated and the OEM cat is very good sound insulator.

Assuming it's the wastegate rattle, what are some ways to remedy it?

Brand new cars with perfect OEM turbos have this sound when you install DPs. Normal and expected. It may be "waste gate rattle" but its normal rattle.

My first n54 was a 2008 135i. Picked it up with 6 miles on it. Had AR dp in it after onl 1k miles. Prior to the DPs there was no "rattle". After the DP's there was a slight metalitc "rattle" on starts. I sold that car. Got a 335i with 70k. No rattle at 70k stock. Put some VRSF DPs (that also fit perfect with no rubbing) and there is slight "rattle" on cold starts. I am convinced this is not subframe contact. I think this is normal rattle. I'm not saying that others do not have a defective wastegate rattle, but IMHO perfect OEM turbos do have a slight rattling sound at start up with aftermarket DPs. Personally, i kinda like the sound

Here's the link to the video, this is not the first start of the day. I took it late in the afternoon after I drove for a while already. Note, the sound appears in the 10 second mark.

That's only a short rattle because the car is warm. When the car is cold, it's even louder and a few seconds longer. Normal?

Is there a way to fix that?

I'm actually contemplating a RB Turbo upgrade at this point. It's so loud that my wife actually asked me, is there something wrong with my car?

Honestly its completely normal with stock turbos if it sounds like that video but a little bit longer on cold starts. ALL 335i's have this sound at cold start.
