So bmw says painting my brake calipers voids warranty

so soon i'm going to have to get my breaks serviced, I was at near my bmw dealer and just decided to pop in, had the mechanic look at my breaks, Cause i have weird grooves in my rotors, then I asked him about painting my calipers because they look rusted out, and he said if you paint your calipers it will void the warranty.

Is this a bunch of BS?

What is the point of having a nice car with parts that rust out they should at least powder coat the calipers. But what is the point warranty, through bmw, to service my breaks, only to have ugly clipers on a nice car. To boot i called another bmw dealer and they said the same thing, said the paint could deteriorate the break hoses and other parts in the breaking system. Therefore the will not service them, F*ck bmw canada.

Good thing i got the warranty for free.

the way it is supposed to work, is that if you paint your calipers and you later have a brake related problem, they could say no to the claim because of your modification.

in the same manner, they couldn't deny a exhaust warranty issue because of a painted caliper.

so it shouldnt be a complete warranty void, just a void of that component if they feel your mod contributed to the failure.

thats in a perfect world, dealers arent perfect.

i guess they could argue that the paint somehow traps more heat, causes fluid to run hotter. overspray may contaminate rotor and pad surface, painting over parts that are designed to move would cause binding and uneven wear etc.

it makes sense for certain things, like if you add nitrous to a car, you should not expect them to cover damage resulting from your mod under warranty, lol.

google magnuson-moss act

they know what it is already.

Complete and utter bullshit. I have painted my brake calipers AND my rotors gloss black- had a set of rotors and pads replaced just fine. My advice - seek out another dealer.

lol i would dude, but there are only 3 bmw dealership in my immediate area, and they all said the same thing. I wouldn't care other wise, but since i have the warranty package i wouldn't mind getting any freebies out of bmw while i can, other wise I'd paint the damn calipers and hubs, Maybe here in Vancouver, there just trying to get out of any work they can with any excuse possible.

OH i do understand the safe guards of modifying anything and it may cause a problem, although it might not,
what i don't understand, is why they only have a terrible paint job on the calipers to begin with,
vs a bmw m1 which have a heavy coat of paint and the bmw lettering paint on them,
and a 335I have a bare bones paint job that looks shitty.

Warranty technicalities, are just made to keep German cars in the hands of the of there dealerships, so a john doe can't do a thing to there own vehicle, or so they think lol

Painting your calipers ruins the brake hoses? It in no way interferes with the function or viability of the braking system and I challenge them to prove that it does.

You're lucky that you have even 3 BMW dealers to choose from in the immediate area. In all of Manitoba there's only 1 dealer. However, in all my experiences with them they've been nothing but excellent to deal with, both sales and service.

I don't think it's just Vancouver, I think it's BMW Canada period. It seems their moto is "F**k the customer on the price in Canada, and then avoid doing any work whatsoever...."

You'd think that extra $15k you paid over the US sticker would get you something, eh?

That is BS. Did you try asking BMW langley? Since they're new you might have better luck.

Lol maybe there denying me service because i bought my car from the states, for 15K cheaper than they were going to sell me the car here in Vancouver for, so F**k BMW Canada and there over pricing. For now on i'm shopping south of the boarder for my beemers, I don't know why there is such a price difference. I used that money for a down payment on a place.

Then my buddies with beemers are like it's from the states. Why does that matter, i would think a bmw from California always sitting in the sun vs Vancouver were it rains and have salt on the roads would be in better condition.

But bmw maintenance and servicing is a strange thing. It's like dealing with a man that has pms, sometimes there fine with something, then other times they make a big deal out of nothing

But thats another topic,
why do 335I have so ugly and poorly painted Calipers compared to a BMW m1

I'm glad I read this because I was going to paint mine black. I also have an extended maintenance warranty so brakes need to be covered.

and because an M1 is an M

You know your best bet is to ask your local BMW dealership where you are going to get the brakes serviced, if painting the brakes will be an issue and will void the warranty. Unfortunately the 3 closest to me, have said Nope sorry. But then it could depend on the person I'm dealing with, if he's a strict about rules and regulations type of guy. I've received messages from guys here in Vancouver saying dude they serviced my car and I had painted calipers. So it's luck of the draw
