Exactly. That's what one of the OSS people told me before when I wanted to buy mtec hid bulbs for the hids. He said it wouldn't make a difference because the outer ring will always be a bit yellow due to the fiber optics.

And like I said, the outer ring was a bit yellow since day one of my hid kit, so it had nothing to do with the UV causing the yellowing. My angel eyes look the same since day one and I have not noticed any more discoloring.

One day i'll learn how to code. hahaha. As for the UV everyone is right and mine have discolored slightly. Very hard to capture this in a photo because its very subtle. I have researched many bulbs on hidplanet and other forums. Unfortunately the only testing that has been done was on the d1s bulbs. I purchases morimoto bulbs which are supposed to be constructed with the same UV blocking glass that its sibling d1s bulb uses. According to my research morimoto bulbs have decent UV blocking ability.

IDK about coding but we do offer lights that work without coding for both of those areas.

I've been thinking about modifying the ballast so that when the headlights are on, the angel eyes are reduced to 20 watts. That would prevent the rings from getting washed out at night.

Is that possible? I don't think you can dim HID lights. Please let us know if you can.

You can't fade them on or off, but you can lower the wattage. Many people have potted oem ballasts to increased the output. Search HID planet and you'll find several DIY's.

I'm not saying it's possible with the exact ballast I have, but it is possible on some. I won't know until I crack it open and find out.

((Step six: disable soft illumination
NFRM module - change WL_SL_1 to hart_einschalten (this removes the on/off fading for the angel eyes)

Step seven: disable angel eye bulb check
NFRM module - change CC_MELD_RL_BL_1_ALS_TFL to nicht_aktiv

Step eight: disable angel eye dimming
NFRM module - PWM_RL_BL_1_FKT_SL change value to wert_01

(OPTIONAL) Step nine: disable angel eye PWM

Read the NFRM module. Then take the NETTODAT file and make a copy to compare from.
Now change PWM_RL_BL_1_FKT_SL wert_01 to wert_06 and recode the car.
Now read the module again and compare this NETTODAT file to the last.
You'll find 2 bytes (values) that changed.
Then you change them:
[ 2C 0C ]

Save this NETTODAT and recode using the NETTODAT instead of the normal MAN file.

Step ten: Enjoy, you're done! }

I emailed DDM regarding potting their ballast. They replied quickly and said that it would be hard to do because they gel fill their ballast to make them waterproof. Sure enough, they weren't kidding.

On another note, I made an important discovery last night. It appears like the angel eyes do have UV filters. If you look closely where the light enters the fiber tubes, you'll see a small glass UV filter. You can't see it very well in my picture, but it is there.

Yea I knew there must have been a filter there. I mentioned earlier that this piece is on my E90 and most of the time when you install aftermarket LED angel eyes, you need to remove that filter. Which isn't a problem with LEDs because LEDs only emit the color temp they are rated for. They don't emit a broad spectrum like HIDs do.

Thanks for posting this! I'm most likely going to go this route. From your experience with AE's, do you think there is a way to dim the inner ring a little? I don't like how the inner light housing gets lit up by the AE and prefer it to be just the rings that gets lit if you know what I mean. This might not be possible just due to the way the AE are designed but there might be a way to lessen the effect.

It's the design of the angel eyes that produces this effect. If you look at my post on the last page, I linked to a picture of the E92 ring design.

You can try putting some kind of diffuser in there but it's a tight space. The only way you'll be able to adjust the ring brightness is if you use 2 different light sources.
