@ cstavaru: I really appreciate all the time you spent in telling us about this upgrade. I was very tempted already, but now I am convinced I will get the Power Kit.

Many Thanks!

Thanks for the great info, cstavaru. I would definitely make this addition to my car, but I am old MS80 and the cost is too great for a leased automobile. Maybe on the next one

Cheers

+1 for the great info Cstavaru. This makes me think about the PP tune even more.

Oh, and by the way, some more observations: my girlfriend (no cars knowledge whatsoever) which had the change to stay in the passenger seat today immediately noticed that the car feels "lighter" and is "more aggressive". Previously she said that the car felt a bit heavy. She said she clearly notices the difference.
The throttle indeed seems more aggressive, and together with the almost elimination of turbo lag makes for a very nice ride

Oil temperatures are lower, I mean the runtime oil temperature is the same (about 110 Celsius) but when driving (slowly) for an hour in heavy traffic (at 32 Celsius outside temp, so pretty hot) the temp did not reach 120 Celsius like usual, it remained at 110.
Do you have an oil cooler?

Thank you for this great review.

Do you know if you can order the parts individually, and what is the price of the fan, radiator, etc.?

Thanks.

EDIT: And yes, I know that the fan won't work without the software... but I have this little thing going:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296789, so if the hardware is at a decent price, I'm assuming the dealer will have the software for free/cheap...

Well...it's not quite like this If you look on page 3 of this thread, the software comes together with the Power Kit, as a CD in the Power Kit's box, and that CD has your VIN on it. That software coming on the CD cannot be installed on another car.

But since you have that "thing" going on with the dealer, just make them install the Power Kit for you. Or at least sell it to you with the ~30% discount that they get it from BMW.

Power Kit

I agree with cstavaru that this is a great upgrade. I have the bmw performance suspension, performance exhaust, and had the kit installed last week. Much like cstavaru, I have to be concerned with the warranty and appreciate bmw releasing a tune. With the tune and other performance pieces, the car is really a lot of fun at this point. A few pictures attached (difficult to capture the new fan and radiator, but you can see a little in the pictures).

Nice ! When will you do a dyno ? I also have plans for the BMW Performance Exhaust, I would like to see if it brings any gains to the table...I read that article about it losing power and now I'm concerned.

Does the car feel like it has gained more top end with the tune? That's my only complaint with the stock motor is that it gives up at around 6000rpm.

Side by side photos of all the parts would be great. If anyone is getting this kit in the near future and could arrange this it would be most helpful to see all the different parts. Taking out the old parts and putting in the new would also be great.

Two other issues remain unresolved: the different air ducts, and USA schedule. I heard early Sept release back in the spring, but a few things have happened since then. Any news on these fronts would be most appreciated. Pictures of your air ducts would be useful if you can crawl under and see what was changed.

It is interesting how the response to this kit has been mitigated by comparisons with aftermarket piggys and flashes. What a different case this is compared to the release of the ZHP package for the E46. This performance tune increases power a lot more than that did, and yet enthusiasm is tepid, at least among the stoplight drag crowd.

If you have a post 03/08 Steptronic 335 I think it's a no-brainer to get this kit. You get a full warranty BMW engineered package with significantly improved cooling capacity. 400 --> 450Nm of torque. Invoice on the MSD81 kit is close to $1200; even with just the usual 20% parts discount and a reasonable price for install you are still under 2k. And unlike other tunes, this one will add resale value. Unfortunately, cost/benefit for folks like me with older cars and manual trannys is not as clear cut.

The other thing that I am pleased about with this kit is that it portends some more exciting developments for the ZMP/Msport packages. What a delight it would be to get the full suite of BMW Performance packages as a factory option. A variant of this kit, with the forthcoming DCT, will make for a very fast 335. Hopefully the new tt M3 will have such a high performance level that there will be plenty of elbow room for the ZMP/Msport/supersport/ti 335 to exceed the raised bar that the new Audi S4 offers. It is obviously so much more efficient and cost effective for us enthusiasts if we can get the good stuff built in at the factory. What a waste to duplicate parts and install labor. That said, it is wonderful that we are now provided with the parts to upgrade if we want.

I certainly wouldn't add a JB+ to this kit but I'm sure a full exhaust would get you a little more power at least.

The air ducts stuff is a real mess. There are about 6-8 air duct part numbers. My dealer ordered the wrong one the first time, it came in 3 days, then ordered the correct one and I am still waiting after a week and a half. Moreover, in the dealer parts selector web site, the selection of the correct air duct set is very confusing, I have seen the mess with my own eyes.
When I will receive the air ducts I will take some pictures. In the mean time I have to drive with the radiator exposed to the wheel and some fins will need to be straighten out because they bent because of small rocks

I would stick a stone grill (screen, hardware cloth) over the opening for now. I noticed that from your photo and was worried that it was left unprotected. No big deal functionally, but it's your baby getting dinged.

Power Kit

I have the m-sport package, so don't know if the air ducting for the package was different in my case. I will not be visiting the dyno cstavaru, but thank you for your dynos, they were appreciated. For me, it is just more fun on the autobahn and there is more power to use. I am not sure that the performance exhaust would provide any advantage either, but sounds good! Pics of performance exhaust below also, I think this is a good upgrade.

*if you do get the exhaust, it seems to hang low by default, they have to bend the last hangers up to reduce the gap and provide a stock look

I have the M-Sport package too. Do you by any chance know the part number for the air ducts used in your install ?
