F1 Commission Delays Turbo Engines
Basically, it was decided to delay the change for a year(2014) and to change the planned engine from a 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder turbo engine.
Read a complete summary here. http://pitpass.com/43984-F1-delays-i...-green-formula 2013 will bring a KERS bump from 60kw to 120kw, though.

the high-revving 4 cylinder turbo should optimize the package weight and gives the car better handling. I don't think the honda civic 4 banger can rev like a F1 engine does. the compromise to V6 seemed like just to please the Ferrari....

A V6 is nothing to write home about, but it should enable them to retain at least some of the unique sound characteristics of a Formula 1 car. Plus, 6-cylinder engines are very commonly found in road performance cars: think about Porsche, Nissan (GT-R, 350-Z), Toyota, BMW, etc. A four-cylinder was really only appealing to Renault (and Cosworth perhaps). Ferrari, Mercedes, Mclaren...these teams all produce road cars with primarily six, eight, or 12-cylinder engines. Even Lotus is steering towards the development of larger engines, with the development of the new Esprit and Elan. |

I just had a great thought.
With F1 going to V6 Turbos, and BMW M moving solely to turbo tech with notably the next M3 being a V6(possibly i6) Turbo. I actually could see BMW getting back into F1 at some point. The engine news is relatively fresh, but the FOM and FIA are making no secret that want more engine manufacturers and automotive brands in general in the sport. I almost expect in the next year or so we might hear a rumor about this.

They did it for costs no doubt, but I don't think it was because they don't have the money. It just wasn't appropriate for them to use it for racing at that time and they didn't really know how bad it would get. Anyways, I'm not saying this will happen tomorrow. But I wouldn't be surprised if in the next year something doesn't crop up. Plus, McLaren's contract with Mercedes is up in 2013. Even if they just try to get in as an engine supplier, that would provide an opportunity. Obviously, this is highly speculative.
