F1 Commission Delays Turbo Engines

Basically, it was decided to delay the change for a year(2014) and to change the planned engine from a 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder turbo engine.

Read a complete summary here.
http://pitpass.com/43984-F1-delays-i...-green-formula

2013 will bring a KERS bump from 60kw to 120kw, though.

the only thing i'm worried about is the sound.
the high-revving 4 cylinder turbo should optimize the package weight and gives the car better handling.

I don't think the honda civic 4 banger can rev like a F1 engine does.

the compromise to V6 seemed like just to please the Ferrari....

It's not just for Ferrari - the compromise was for the majority of fans who didn't want to see glorified Subarus whizzing around a race track.

A V6 is nothing to write home about, but it should enable them to retain at least some of the unique sound characteristics of a Formula 1 car. Plus, 6-cylinder engines are very commonly found in road performance cars: think about Porsche, Nissan (GT-R, 350-Z), Toyota, BMW, etc.

A four-cylinder was really only appealing to Renault (and Cosworth perhaps). Ferrari, Mercedes, Mclaren...these teams all produce road cars with primarily six, eight, or 12-cylinder engines. Even Lotus is steering towards the development of larger engines, with the development of the new Esprit and Elan.

Comfirmed, V6-Turbo with KERS in 2014!

Quote:
The FIA has rubber-stamped plans to bring V6 turbo engines to the sport in 2014.

The F1 Commission met recently and decided to scrap the ratified four-cylinder rules for 2013 in favour of increasing the cylinder count by two and delaying the introduction by a year. There had been some dissent from Ferrari about using four cylinder engine and Mercedes and Cosworth both voiced concerns about cost. All the teams and engine manufacturers are now understood to be behind the new rules.

"Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One," read an FIA press release. "The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season."

A report on the official Formula One website said the new engines would be as powerful as the current V8s with Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) and turbo charging - turbo compounding has been discussed but was not mentioned - making up the shortfall. Rev limits have not yet been confirmed, but Adrian Newey told BBC Sport in Valencia that they would be "around 14,000 or 16,000".

I just had a great thought.

With F1 going to V6 Turbos, and BMW M moving solely to turbo tech with notably the next M3 being a V6(possibly i6) Turbo. I actually could see BMW getting back into F1 at some point.

The engine news is relatively fresh, but the FOM and FIA are making no secret that want more engine manufacturers and automotive brands in general in the sport.

I almost expect in the next year or so we might hear a rumor about this.

It won't happen. BMW didn't leave due to the current technical rules. They left because the costs in F1 were too high for them. Unless the costs reduce drastically, we won't see the return of teams like BMW and Toyota

I don't think it is quite as cut and dry as you make it out to be. When BMW left F1, it was right before the massive dip in auto sales that followed from the start of the recession.

They did it for costs no doubt, but I don't think it was because they don't have the money. It just wasn't appropriate for them to use it for racing at that time and they didn't really know how bad it would get.

Anyways, I'm not saying this will happen tomorrow. But I wouldn't be surprised if in the next year something doesn't crop up. Plus, McLaren's contract with Mercedes is up in 2013. Even if they just try to get in as an engine supplier, that would provide an opportunity. Obviously, this is highly speculative.

We had 4's and 6's in the 80's they should leave the number of cylinders up to the manufacturer.
