First Time Detailing

Ok, so I figured i'd do a write up of how my first detail went. I just finished polishing with IP and will go FP2, FMJ, then P21S after my break.

Wash
-Straightforward, this I do all the time.

Clay
-Piece of cake. Probably did use too much lube, but thats better than too little I guess.

Polish
-I want to shoot someone . Lol not really, but what a PITA. My buffer is vibrating like no ones business. Its a porter cable made for meguiars. My hands are killing me after doing just the IP. Also, the pad started falling of so I took it off the car (while running, big mistake) polish went everywhere. It procedded to fall of two more times. I think maybe Megiuars has a special velcro that works better with their pads? Other than those issues, the car looks really good!

-Final Polish 2 went much more smoothly for me. I dont know if its because I dropped the speed down to 4 or if its because I was using a less abrasive pad. Maybe its just because im tarded. After this, I did a rub down of 50/50 iso and water.

Sealant
-FMJ. Just followed the instuctions on the back and went smoothly. Let haze, buff out. Cool

Wax
-P21S. I just rubbed on, moved on to the next panel, went back and rubbed the last one out. I didnt bother letting it haze because it said it was easier to take it off sooner. Also, I dont know if I should have bothered doing ALL the panels, it seems kind of pointless to do the bottom of the cars bumpers and the side skirts. But, I did it anyway.

In the End
-My entire body hurts. I feel like I gave someone a piggyback ride for several hours. Then ran a marathon. But, it was worth it, the car looks amazing! Pics on the way!

Wrong counterweight for the backing plate you're using? Yeah PCs vibrate, but not that badly. Definitely easier on the hands than a palm sander.

The PC does vibrate like crazy, but you just have to pace yourself and take breaks. I also have the pad falling off the backing plate issue. It only happens at Speed 6. The backing plate gets too hot and transfers the heat through the velcro to the pad. The result is the velcro locks on the backing plate melting and losing grip on the pad. I've destroyed 2 backing plates and many pads because of this.

damn, i wish i could keep my engine bay that clean here in the desert. With all the dust we get around here, i'd have to detail my bay 3 times a day....

Anyway, Lookin' good!!

Nice work! Cracked me up when you said you pulled the polisher off the car and flung the polish all over the place. I think most of us have done that at some point or other.

You'll find that you get more efficient the more you do this and it will take less and less time -- yet you'll do a better and better job. You car looks great, and the pain of doing this will go away in a few weeks. You'll start thinking about doing it again.
