E90 - How does radiator fan work?
This is probably a newbie question but I couldn't find an answer anywhere.
We have had 3-Series for years and never really noticed the aux fan coming on, apparently you can even even remove the engine driven fan without problems (Fan Delete Mod). In our new E90 (320i SE Auto) the fan comes on after 10/15 minutes of driving. Is the setup different on the newer models? |

Sounds like someone is chasing after the nth degree bhp.
I'm sure deleting the fan function will just reduce the MTBF of the engine and its ancillary components.

We don't have the AC on.
The service department thinks the fan should not switch on normally but they don't seem able to fix it. Anyone own E90 or similar model and can confirm their cooling fan does not switch on? |

Have you run the engine at idle and let the car warm up?
The fan should normally come on after some time. When you switch the A/C on teh fan should come on to cool the condenser.

ShereKhan, redE93cab, thanks for the replies. You are giving different answers but then you have different models!
I'll try the AC after warm up to see what happens. |

Prog1 if the condesor isn't cooled when needed then the air con system will eventually just go bang as its a pressurised system.
I found out a lot about the air con systems in a car when my last car vented all of its gas through two dodgy pipes connected to the condensor. http://www.airconditioningforcars.co.uk/ACpage01.htm

Squeeze i'm just re-iterating what a few air con guys have told me.
On my last car when the air con guy looked at my safety device (it had been bypassed by last owner) and the corrosion on my pipes was pretty bad - BTW we are talking about a Peugeot not a BMW. As there was holes all over my air con system it didn't matter if I had a safety device or not.

I'm not so sure my BMW is better - I'd rather go back to the Peugeot.
The pug went back to the dealers less than the BMW.

FYI: Under normal circumstance the electric radiator fan should not run
OK back to my original question.
My 320i SE electric radiator fan was coming on under normal driving conditions (and it was winter!) after a few minutes of driving. The service department fixed it on the third go, they said it was a loose wire on the temperature sensor. Now it does not come on at all, and apparently shoudn't. |

It amazes me why it took them 3 visits before remedying the fault. Shouldn't the temperature sensor be the 1st place to check and confirming the integrity of the electrical connection to it. I assume if the connection is open then the fan goes on. Basic really !
