Question 4 335d owners....

I have read where their fuel filler neck is designed for a 24mm fuel nozzle and subsequently I have heard that not all diesel fuel nozzles here in America are 24mm.

What is your experience with this issue and are there any workarounds?

Thx

Yeah, the slot for the nozzle to go in, only will fit the standard nozzle size for diesel. But when you buy the car, they include a little plastic kind of funnel/adapter that slides into the slot and then allows you to fit nozzles that don't adhere to the standard size.

I'd say probably about 15% of pumps I've gone to need the adapter.

Not off hand and I googled and couldn't find one either.

It's essentially a long, black funnel, that comes in a plastic cylinder, and a pair of blue rubber gloves you can wear if you're worried about spilling, one thing I noticed (and that it warns you about on the label) is it can prevent the nozzle from stopping when the amount gets to a certain level, so one time I had some diesel shoot out at me after overfilling.

I think it's called something like the "diesel bypass adapter" or something along those lines.

X2....In the 3 months and 15,000 miles I have driven, I have only come accross 2 nozzles, both at BP stations, that wouldn't fit.

Exactly, you learn which stations you will need to use the funnel for. It's not that big of deal. Just be more careful, as stated, about the lack of auto stop on the nozzel.
Cheers.

Never saw the adapter

Just saw my 335d was dropped in NJ after an ED pickup last month.

I never saw anything like what you folks have been describing. I wonder if they will present it to us when we pick it up at the PC in SC?

I'd like to see a pic of it also. If I find one, I'll post it.

Talking

I had to use the adapter today to fill up for the first time. The diesel pump had a filler nozzle like a petrol pump and the small circumference wouldn't release the opening. The adapter works great. I keep it in a bag in the trunk with a mini box of latex gloves. I never got fuel on my hands and then packed the adapter back into the case and into the bag. no problems.

I have yet to need to use the adapter in BC, Washington or Oregon. In Vancouver, my local Shell station's pump fits OK.

On a similar note, can anyone comment on whether it is possible to have a fueling mishap with the 335d? That is to say, will the nozzle on the gasoline pump even fit in the 335d's tank? I'm a little worried that until I get in the habit of using the diesel pumps, I might absentmindedly drown my car with the wrong fuel.

The BMWs have a fuel filler neck with a dual-stage locking mechanism that theoretically prevents anything but the 24mm diesel nozzles from being fully inserted. Gasoline nozzles are 21mm, and not large enough to release the locking mechanism. Check out this thread at cleanmpg for a detailed description and diagram.

Yeah, the whole point of the bypass adapter is there's a system in place preventing you to put in gasoline instead of diesel. There's just a few station's that aren't up to the latest nozzle standard on their diesel pumps.

There's also a few warnings you'll see on the gas cap as well as the inside of the fuel door reminding you to only put diesel in.

...be prepared for some attendants running out and yelling at you letting you know you're putting diesel in a BMW.

Yeah, I figured that BMW would have made the car people-proof. I don't think I'll ever make that mistake, but then again we all have brain lapses every once in a while.

I am so used to going to the green pump now, I am worried about putting diesel in my Volvo station wagon. I guess the safe thing to do is to get a diesel station wagon.

Yes, I had this happen a few weeks ago in Sechelt, when a German born attendant came running out to warn me that I was about to fill up with diesel. He was unaware that BMW had introduced "diesels" to North America.

Another question: is the pump cutoff supposed to work with the bypass adapter?

I fueled my car for the first time the other day and of course, lucky me, the closest and most convenient station doesn't have proper nozzles. So I used the adapter and before I knew it I was swimming in diesel. Was that particular pump faulty, or are all pumps unable to auto shutoff when using the adapter?

I don't think the auto shut off will work with the funnel. I had the same thing happen to me and it ruined a pair of Piloti shoes.
