LeMons 2011?
I just solicited myself to a team that is going to drive an older BMW at LeMons at HPR this year. I sorta doubt I will "get on the team", but we shall see. If I don't, I think I will start my own team, and buy an old $500 BMW 2002 or 320i or the like. This is a feeler to know who else would be willing to commit time and money and join me. I admit I know next to nothing about it, other than the $500 limit, stripping out the interior and non-essentials and adding a roll cage, but it sounds like a boat load of fun. I am not expecting commitments yet, but be honest (with yourself), who would be interested?

this might sound like something fun cheap to do Alex. I would be interested in joining you and buy a cheap car and have a little fun on the track. So you have a $500 limit on the car? What about everything else?

Edit: Tires - 2.3 and 4.2.1. All I see for now. It looks like you can get good (new) tires, but they must have a wear rating of 190. That means Potenza RE050As are out! HPR/Colorado is July 10-11. I didn't expect many BMWs for cheap. BMW isn't a necessity (gasp!), but I'd prefer it, especially since I used to own a 2002.

Look at section 2.2 in the rules. I'll have my SCCA regional license this spring, but it's not necessary. I have no idea what a LeMons Competition Membership card is, let alone how to get it. There was no mention on how to get it. Maybe a bribe? Also important to note: 1.6 and section 6! If you roll the car, you're out! And of course section 3, on safety. We'll have to have fire retardent clothing, for example. Not that I think that is extravagent!

BTW, here's something to wet your appetite.
The end of this vid is a bummer, looks like a jack@ss move on the part of the guy in front, knowing he was going to sabotage the radiator. We'll have to watch for that B.S. Epically good driving in this one. It's so good, I commented on youtube. (You can search for "YAqSPp7Na6g". Exclude both double quotes.) This guy gets passed a lot, because his tranny started to fail (see comments after searching for "0FK4mXGv6FQ"), but they still finished in top 1/2. Note the results of carnage at the end of the vid.

l think I'll throw a bid in at last second, if it's not past $450:
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...w=170596587532 Who knows if that will make the reserve. Anyways, I'm off to a friend's house to do some bench racing and talk trash for the 24hours of Daytona.

Just so you know it's a lot more than $500 to do this.
We have an 89 civic and race lemons. ( Nelson Ledges, MAM, HPR, Autobahn ,etc ) We had well over 4K into the car before one race. $500 car $1200 cage ( unless your a good welder ) $800 in tires for the race $second set of wheels $1000 for seat, blets, padding, cut off switches $xxxx for getting it running reliably... $travel expenses $1000 entry fee at minimum per race. then each person has ($1300+ in gear) $Helmet $Fire suite $Fire Shoes The list goes on and on. We've now raced 5-6 races and so far our team has invested over 15K into the idea of Lemons racing... so just keep in mind while it is cheap it's not as cheap as most people think, especially if you want to drive the entire weekend. A reliable well maintained car is key and that costs money. Not trying to discourage you but I see it time and time again where people think it's only $500 until they get suprised. Also the LeMons Competition License is something you buy when you register for a race. It's $50.00 and good for one year. You only have to buy this if you don't have another race license from one of their approved sanctioning bodies. |

Thank you. So I estimated correctly. Personally, I had about a $3k or $4k budget, and with at least 3 others willing to budget about the same, I think we can run. At least that should get us started with our local track this year.
Edit: rereading your post, it looks like it needs to be $5k. The first year is most expensive, I presume. Quote:

Well good to hear you were on the right budget path. Your first race will be your most expensive by far. You cannot start soon enough, I'd get after a car now. It's amazing how fast the races sneak up on you. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them if I can. |

OK! I spoke with Hank (I presume you know him) about a roll-cage, ouch he was pricey. Great guy though. He does tech inspections for NASA, SCCA, and LeMons.
