I did this mod today on my new 08 335i Sedan and would like to add the following comments to help other DIYers.
1. I used a small prybar (wrapped in a cloth) to remove the center console trim as it was impossible to remove by pulling on it with ones fingers. Removing the foam insert around the shift know helped gain a bit more room. 2. After you've removed the center console trim and disconnected the cig lighter cable and flipped it over there are a couple of foam pads to remove from the clips next to the cig lighter tray. Don't forget to put them back after you've installed the sunglasses tray. 3. Be sure to pry the cover off the cig lighter tray lid using the slots. I used a medium sized flat blade scredriver wrapped in a cloth and twisted it to disengage the clips pop the lid off. It comes free just as you think its about to break! 4. Put the cover (removed in step #3 above) on the lid of the sunglasses tray BEFORE you attach it to the center console. 5. When you transfer cover to the lid of the sunglasses tray, be sure to properly engage the lip at the front. So, seat the front of the cover on the lid first, squeeze it together at the front while pushing the cover back to engage the clips. If you don't properly seat the the cover on the lip at the front it will be too high up at the front. 6. Replace the foam pads you removed in step #2 on the clips. 7. Before you put the center console trim back in the car you might want to fish the now unused cigarette lighter cable/plug out of the side of the center console on the passenger side so you can re-use it for powering a cell phone, etc. See the continuation of the DIY below. P.S. I got mine from my local dealer. It cost $22 (+Tax) after my BMW CCA discount. Online, Bavarian Autosport and Pelican Parts have it for $28 (+Shipping). I also changed the shift knob. Re-routing the cigarette lighter power for re-use
Re-routing the cigarette lighter power for re-use...
1. After you removed the center console trim, etc. you are left with what is shown in photo #1. Note the plug that fed the cigarette lighter socket (and LEDs) at the front left. 2. Unclip the plug and its cable so it is floating free as shown in photo #2. 3. Push down on the carpet while pulling up slightly on the crossbar (with the "X" shaped reinforcers in it) and push the plug and cable under the right side of the crossbar to get the plug to the other side as shown in photo #3. 4. Push the plug down through the gap at the front right of the center console area as shown in photo #4. 5. Reach under the trim on the passenger side toward the front of the transmission tunnel and you should be able to feel the plug/cable and pull it through so it appears as shown in photo #5. 6. You can now replace the center console cover as you have the cigarette ligher power cable available for use. I'm working on solutions for this and will post them shortly. In the meantime you can tuck the plus & cable away out of site under the trim on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. |

If you're going to do that why not utilize the power of the LED light from the old ashtray and put a light in the sunglass tray (that's what I'm planning should I do this mod as I often store loose change or business cards in there). Also, in case you were needing the information the leftmost wire (brown) is the ground, the middle (green I think) is the power to the cig lighter and the rightmost one (purple and pink...I think) is the power to the LED light in the original ashtray. If you already knew this then maybe it will help someone else.

Anyone in the Frederick/Hagerstown area available to assist me with this DIY? I am kinda nervous about doing it myself. I should have the part in a few days.

Read my DIY for alarm motion sensor in convertible. I give details there. If you need more pm me. It really is easy, just pull up on the back corner of the center console after tking off shift knob and boot cover.

As I mentioned above, I found it easy to use a small prybar (the short part of the L-shaped kind) to pop the center console trim off. I inserted it under each of the four corners of the shifter opening. As I was also replacing the shift knob I yanked that off first, then removed the shift boot, then removed the foam insert around the shift lever to allow easier access to the trim. I didn't take any pics because those already provided by others in this DIY thread are adequate. Honestly, its not that difficult to do.

I am pretty sure this is posted somewhere else, but when you remove the gear shifter (automatic) do you need to shift it to "D", and if so, can you shift it into "D" with the car off? Or, does it just pull off while it's in "P"? Sorry for the slightly OT question...

Either way works. Then just pull on the shifter.

Successfully removed everything today expecting the part to show up in the mail, but it didn't so I'm going to leave everything sit as is and hope it shows up on Monday. Only real problem was removing the wood trim from the ashtray unit. Didn't realize it came off with the plastic frame so I will need to glue it back in place as it popped off the plastic frame but was not damaged in the process. Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Frank who volunteered to help if I need it. So far, so good.
