Daimler, BMW Plan Cross-Ownership

According to German magazine Der Spiegel, BMW and Daimler are working on a plan to swap shares in order to shore up their businesses during one of the most severe downturns the automotive industry has ever seen.

The deal calls for BMW to take a 7 percent stake in Daimler and for Daimler to also take the same share in BMW stock. The Quandt family, one of Germany's richest dynasties which owns 46 percent of BMW, are opposed to the deal but cannot stop it. The family fears that Daimler will attempt a takeover of BMW as they did previously with Chrysler after first calling the DaimlerChrysler deal a "merger of equals."

The two premium automakers, both hit hard by the current crisis in the industry, will also shortly announce a plan to cooperate on purchasing components, in a move that will save both companies hundred of millions of euros in the short-term.

Der Spiegel also reported that the German government has been informally approached and asked to look at whether there are any anti-trust issues with the deal.

Bbbbbbb but only GM is having problems.

Seriously, this is bad. Say goodbye to the sports sedan and hello to the 5000lbs tank with 3 motor configs:
1. an underperforming V6
2. an underperforming V8
3. a blown rocket engine

Seriously, it is good to know that Daimler is on the search for a new company to mess up after the Chrysler malarkey (Which they almost had to pay Cerberus to get rid of).

maybe merc can do something for bmw since all the new mercs are looking nice while bmw is starting to out of date. I just hope they don't touch the performance aspect of the cars if this really does happen

In a straight line, maybe.

Mercs are so poorly balanced, it's a joke. I don't think they actually have any chassis engineers on staff, at least not at AMG.

So I should lie then? They have shitty slushbox automatic transmissions and they handle like dogshit, I've driven the E55, E63, SL55, and C63. Same shit, different day. They're vague and awkward, tail happy and horrible through corners. The only decent handling car they make that costs less than _$300,000_ is the CLK63 Black.
