Sounds like your keyfob battery might be dead. In previous cars I've replaced the battery in my fob, but I've heard that it actually charges when it's inserted (not sure if that's true. If not I'm sure someone will call me a dumbass shortly). Do you have CA and don't use the fob hole? If so, try inserting they fob the next time you drive. Otherwise see if you can change the battery.

As far as programming goes, that generally happens at the dealer, or if you order a second fob, they get it in partially programmed or as a "blank" and the first time you insert the fob it syncs to your car. That's how it was with the one I ordered. So no real programming needed, unlike my infiniti where it was a complex thing with inserting the key, moving it to accy mode, hitting brake/gas/whatever until it worked.

If you have CA, the battery is not rechargeable.

AFAIK, the non CA FOB battery is not user serviceable but does recharge while in the slot. If the battery has reached EOL then the FOB must be replaced or you have to hack open the FOB, try replacing it and glue it back together.

really? the CA at the dealer told me that cars with comfort access can also charge their key fobs if they stick it in the keyfob holder

^ im not sure. I have CA and when my dash shows me a "Low battery key" sign, I put the key into the slot and the thing works for a while based on how long it was in the slot. You can try it and see if it works. On your next drive, insert the key into the fob and drive around for 10-15 miinutes.. then see if it works

I am sure. I might be tempted to try testing if you actually had proven results based on a rigorous test method but since you dont and it contradicts the facts from BMW...then well, I'm not tempted.

+1 too, it happen to mine too. now if i don't put the key into the slot, it's always shows me a "LOW BATTERY KEY" sign. and i hv to get my key very near to the slot(NOT PUT IN TO SLOT) to start the car. So i think it's time to change the battery for my key, just wondering is any "particular"battery?
