BMW Approved Winter Tires

Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody has a list of BMW approved winter tires that would be covered under the BMW Wheel/Tire plan?

FYI I will be getting a E90 335XI Msport...

I have tried searching for a list but can't find one.

I want to stick with RFT winters.

Thanks,
Justin

Anybody know if the LM60 RFTs are covered?(under wheel/tire) What's the difference between the LM25-RFT and LM60-RFT? I know that the LM60 "replaced" the LM25. Are there any others similar that would be covered under bmw wheel/tire?

What size are you referring to? Also not sure what you mean by "BMW approved". If you are talking about a tire being covered by BMW by some sort of tire insurance , you should probably talk with BMW North America about that.

Thanks for the reply Gary. I am referring to either 17s or 18s for a 2011 E90 335XI - Msport. I think this would be 225/45-17 or 225/40-18.

Yes I am referring to winter tires that would be covered under BMW wheel/tire protection plan. I will try to contact BMW NA and get a list. If I get one I will post it here.

Thanks!

I just bought a pre-owned 335xi and the dealer told me with the tire insurance it will cover winter tires I put on the car.

I would call and double check to make sure but I am pretty sure it doesn't matter which ones you put on it...

it seems the LM-60 does not exist in RFT (Run-flat)
the only option seems to be with the LM-25

Depends on the size (which is why I asked him that question originally )

In 225/45R17 there is just the LM25 RFT, but in 225/40R18 the LM60 RFT is available.

Which would be better suited for midwest winters? We get lots of storms but they are pretty good at clearing the streets so I would be driving on "dry" roads fairly often.

Thanks.

I am in the same boat, but nobody is able to confirm that. I bought my car two days ago and within the dealership I bought it, I got three different stories:

1. Sales person: Yeah, any winter wheel set is covered, even if you buy it from Tire Rack.
2. Guy selling the tire & wheel insurance: Only BMW wheel packages purchased from BMW are covered in addition to the wheels already on the car.
3. Service department: No way, only the OEM wheels and tires that came with the car are covered.

I am awaiting the Service Manager to confirm with BMW and is supposed to let me know tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find out.

Gary, I wonder if the original poster is referring to the "star" coded run-flat tires, with the star symbol on the sidewall indicating BMW approval (as described in the E90 Owner's manual. I think there are only about 3 of these specific to the E90 in 17' and 18' diameters; Blizzak LM25, Potenza RE050A and maybe one each Michelin winter and summer tire. Do you know the full list? Will the tire manufacturers continue with this "star" rating/approval system as they phase out older tires and replace them with newer designs?

The LM25s that I recently bought from Tire Rack have the star symbol and my factory 050A's also have it on the sidewall.

I'm in the same boat as well, got a 2008 CPO'd E90 with the tire/wheel package since the roads in NYC are a disaster. Already had to use the insurance once, ironically right after leaving the dealership.

I was told by the Finance Manager that a lot of people have gotten away with getting winter tires insured. But I am assuming that if you plan on keeping OEM summer wheels/tires and slapping on winter wheels/tires from Tirerack like so many other forum members have, it'll only cover what were on the OEM rims.

Anyone have success in claiming tire/wheel insurance on non-OEM wheels/tires? Share your experience!

Yep, it sounds like BMW likes to keep customers happy... particularly if you go to the dealership where you purchased the car. Basically, the finance manager and the service manager both confirmed that they will honor the tire & wheel protection plan on the second set of winter wheels if they are BMW rims and approved tires.

Furthermore, they even said they would cover the tires even if they were on aftermarket rims, but that was a little bit more of a side comment to me since I bought 3 cars from them and they said they will find ways to make it work for me if/when needed. Also, they said if I happen to be stuck somewhere and can't get to their dealership, that I should just pay to get the tire replaced and they would then reimburse it through the insurance plan after the fact.

Nicely done, which dealership in NY was this? I got my CPO and confirmation from Finance Manager at Oyster Bay BMW.
