335i won't move. Weird noise.

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a e93 335i.
Yesterday my brother borrowed it, he called me to inform me that he had stuffed it somehow. I don't know how this issue has come up, the car was driving perfectly.

Basically, when you put the car in D, a weird noise can be heard from where the rear passenger side tyre is. It sounds like a violent clinking/grinding. Seems like it could be diff/shaft related, but I'm not sure. It goes back into P fine, but as soon as you put the car back into D, the noise returns. So I towed the car home and it will be sent to a workshop first thing tomorrow morning.

Any input regarding the above would be appreciated.

Thanks.

diff noise

I think that the diff has a broken spider gear, best to fit an LSD or this will happen. Sorry the only way this can happen is when you do donuts or burn outs, do not let him near the car again. call Southern BM and talk to Andrew they will have some used spider units or they can supply a new LSD

I suspect as much, he always thrashes cars. He blew the RB26 in my 34 as well.

Southern BM is literally other side of town for me, I'd only use them for tuning etc, because it is too much of an inconvenience to travel there for repairs/service, besides I've tried calling Andrew twice this week, no answer or call back.

Is the car tuned? By the sounds of it, I would bet on an issue with the diff centre.

Let us know how it turns out. It would be useful info for others.

OT. What are you getting your brother for Christmas??

Fair enough.

Yeah, if the diff is beyond repair, then I'd most probably replace it with an LSD. He can afford it, busting cars/paying for them is his hobby. Although I won't ask him to pay unless it is obvious that the problem occured due to a day of thrashing....

If you are in a hurry it's not that hard (others might comment as I think everything is easy) to take the rear cover off and have a look. If you can't get to southern or another BMW Indy, I'd be inclined to call a mobile chap and spend a couple of hours investigating???

Perhaps it's the half shaft, seen a few of those let go in the US. Have not heard of a diff going.

lol @ m3.

I wouldn't be surprised if something similar has happened. I didn't buy the 335 for drag racing anyway, it is more of a cruiser.

Car is at the workshop now, I eagerly await updates....I hope I have the car back soon.

Drive shaft.
Not as bad as first expected, but a new drive shaft is costly (1k mark).

$1k in the US would probably buy you half a 335i with change left over to buy a big kahuna burger
