When I brought my car to BMW of Fairfax on Monday, the tech looked at it, compared it to another E90 in service, and said it's normal since they both did it! I told the advisor to fix the other E90 too, it's not normal and is likely the lower steering joint assembly. The SA put the shop foreman on my car, and lo and behold my lower steering joint assembly needs replacing. CPO covered with a $50 deductible.

I don't know if it's because I did 250 miles in the F30 Luxury but the E90 is a revelation and much more fun to drive. The steering is quite stiff, moreso than I remember, but it could be due to the lazy F30. The click is GONE.
Is this what was replaced? http://www.ecstuning.com/ES205583/

My car does this too, not sure if it's always done it or I've only just noticed. Only had the car 3 months. It's not CPO though, bought from an indy dealer... Wondering what I should do.

My current option is, do nothing and deal with it / try to forget about it. I'm right in thinking it's more of an annoyance than anything else?
Yes, that part fixed my issue completely.

I'm gonna buy it and take it to my indy. Might be a dumb question but do you need one or two of these?

Just one but that's going off the repair order.

is the clicking very noticeable? i'm having an issue but don't hear any noise at all.
my steering wheel vibrates back and forth, usually between 40-60mph. most of the time this only occurs on very hot days.
i've had the tires rotated and balanced twice, the alignment done, the tie rods checked... basically everything i can think of short of bringing it to the dealer and asking them to look (ugh $).
is that a symptom of the steering column possibly needing to be replaced and is this done as a recall or something?

The issue I speak about (which I think is what the OP posted) is noticed more at slow speeds, if you were to drive at say 5-10mph and move the steering wheel ever so slightly from off center and back again you'll feel a slight 'bump' is the only way I can describe it. Mine isn't a loud clicking as such that anyone else could hear, I think I would only notice it as the driver.

Sounds like it might be slightly different to your issue?

Don't do it haha, It will make you want to fix something that's probably always been there but you've only just noticed. :-)

I read the whole thing and saw at least 2 different problem descriptions. My clicking or knocking has always been there. Asked dealers to fix it under CPO and got turned down years ago. Now the problem is mine. I did some troubleshooting and found that if I put my hand on top of the lower joint assembly. I can feel play between the shaft and the joint by moving them by hand. I also duplicate the noise having anther person jiggle the steering wheel back and forth by 1 inch each side while I listened and felt for the play under the car. Mine does this while parked. Unlike other members, I don't notice noise or other steering problems at low speed. However, the steering wheel wobbles between 60 to 75mpg but smooth out hat faster speeds. Its got 110k miles now, not sure to get rid of it soon or fix it. I just spent a grand replacing struts and shocks. Hate going through this with older cars.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, however my car is making the clicking noise when the steering wheel is turned while the car is not moving or moving very slowly, other than that it drives straight. Is it safe to drive? Supposed to make a long road trip tomorrow.

If it's the lower steering column it's safe, just loses some of its precise feeling.

I have noticed my is doing clicking noise only after engine worms up. If i leave car for a night or start it when i am coming back home from work ( at least 8h standing still and cooling down @ parking ) there is no clicking nois. After 10-15min of driving it's back.

I had the lower steering joint replaced just today. Steering feels great now!
Interestingly though I took a look at the old part and can't feel any obvious play in it at all. It's possible that really just the bolt was loose or perhaps some subtle play is amplified in the steering feel.

Bumping this thread, as I just had the lower joint assembly (P/N 32-30-6-784-845) replaced under CPO. I had the clicking sound from under the dash when slightly move the steering wheel left and right.

So I had the part replaced and now the issue has been solved.

Although, now my steering wheel is slightly off, more than enough to annoy me. When I contacted the dealer about it, the service advisor told me that the car did not need an alignment after the joint assembly replacement, and that it was probably like that before.

Well I had the car aligned by them maybe a month before, and steering was dead center!

I have read somewhere that the steering angle sensor also needs to be calibrated as well? I've mentioned it to them and they won't do anything.

Can someone show me an extract of the actual procedure, including the steering angle sensor calibration, or provide some more details, as I really want to push this issue forward.
On the work order, it is not mentioned that they have calibrated the steering angle sensor, could it be the issue?

I have not had a chance to look but did they do a recall for this? My 2008 335i has the clicking noise as well.

So I took my car to the dealer and they found that the popping noise on my car is from the drivers side strut bearing clicking in the housing. Ordered the repair kit.

Drivers side upper strut bearing repair kit fixed mine. No more popping and clicking.

while replacing the serpentine belt i snugged the bolt on the lower steering joint assembly & wheel click is now gone. e90 328xi w/240,000
it was the top bolt on the very bottom assembly connection.
also, it’s true that the oil service light comes on no matter what on startup unless you code it out on higher mileage n52’s. they say at 180,000 but mine didn’t start until 230,000.

Reviving old thread omg.. I have been dealing with this issue for over 2 years!! when I had warranty the dealer replaced a whole bunch of other suspension parts like struts, control arm bushings lmao!! The whole time it was the lower joint steering wow.. How did the techs miss this? Now that i'm out of warranty i have to buy the part myself and it isn't cheap for the little piece. My local independent shop figured it out in less than 5 mins..

Does anyone know what kind of tools i need for this job? Thanks!!
