Regarding Car Tax in Illinois

So I recently got a letter from the city of Chicago stating I owed more money on my taxes for my 335i. They let me know that I owe them another 300 dollars in taxes. Here is what I am confused about, I went to the DMV to register the car and they even told me the exact amount for the taxes owed. I no longer own the car and they are sending me these letter telling them I owe more. I was curious if anyone had this happen before, and do I have to pay the extra when they told me that the amount I a paid was the correct amount?

Any advice?

Well, if you owned it at some point, you still have to pay it. I guess if you don't have a copy of the form you filled out paying the taxes, you wouldn't have proof.

When I paid taxes on my 335, someone helping me fill out the form made a math error resulting in me having to pay the difference plus late fees. Needless to say, I double checked the form this time.

i do have the forms, I have everything and even paperwork my accountant did as well, just curious what action I should take next. I am having my dealership friend look at the math and see if I did indeed have something messed up

Umm, are you talking about sales tax on the car? I don't think IL has annual vehicle use tax. You only pay tax at time of purchase:

http://www.revenue.state.il.us/Busin...es/vehicle.htm

City Of Chicago does not have an annual vehicle use tax either:

http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en.../tax_list.html

However, they have a higher (10.5% IIRC) vehicle SALES tax if the vehicle is registered in the city of Chicago limits. So if they did not charge you enough sales tax at the time of the purchase of your car, then CoC will hit you up with late fees.

It's got to be sales tax. Either you made an error on the form or you tried to pass it off as registered elsewhere and they subsequently found out otherwise or they made a mistake. I honestly have alot of luck with taxing bodies and speaking openly and honestly about the issue. Ask them directly what the nature of the charge is.

Hmm.That's weird: Cook county DOES have vehicle use tax:

http://www.cookcountygov.com/portal/...of/313/use_tax

More details here:
http://www.cookcountygov.com/taxonom...X_SYNOPSIS.pdf

and here:

http://cookcountygov.com/taxonomy/re...07-rev4-09.pdf

Good luck with this and let us know how this is ends. I am curious because this will be my 4th year in Chicago and I've never paid vehicle use tax.

EDIT:
This is bit confusing: So the cook county USE tax is just a different name for "sales tax". The tax rate is .0075 (three-quarters of 1%). I remember having to pay that when I got my 335i. More info here:

So in order to fix the issue they want me to send in the RUT-50 form that we filled out at the DMV and it should resolve this issue. Now I have to go through paperwork to find it

Yes, there is a use tax but its a one time event usually paid at registration along with sales tax. Its actually a sales and use tax.

Yes calling anyone in the city is a pain, even when dealing with the state I call the springfield office.

I had to pay use tax when I bought my old m3 from a dealer in Lake County. The letter said if you buy from a dealer in Cook County they would charge the tax, otherwise you'd have to pay up later.

They want me to send in the form I filled out, the shitty thing is I went to the DMV told them exactly what happened, how I obtained the car and they told me fill this out and told me the exact amount (even had our cpa look it over)
