For what you are looking to spend, you could probably find something around 2007-2008. It doesn't even necessarily have to be an SI, the K20A3 is definitely more peppy and fun to drive, though. Modding would be hard to stay away from because of how cheap parts are, but for a daily, there's not much use modding a Civic.

There were a few things that needed to be replaced, but I was definitely never left stranded thats for sure. I will miss the reliability. Rsx market is great now though, most private sales are cheap because they are now outdated.

Ducati Monster - decent gas mileage, small tank - fun to drive! Not box shapped though.

Everything considered, would you pick an RSX-S or Si for sub-5k DD at this point? Or would you think that the S or the Si is even necessary? I'm in the market for this now..

None of its necessary man! It's just slightly more fun than a base civic.

It honestly depends on the seller, first and foremost. Reason being, a lot of Rsx-S's and Si's are glorified by their owners, and are led to believe they own race cars. If you are looking at it from a $5k stand point, I wouldn't dip into a S or Si platform, because it will most likely have been beat on and not provide you with really any more benefit as a DD than a standard model. The only perk to a Type-S or Si is added HP, aluminum intake mani instead of ABS plastic, K20A2 vs K20A3. The differences aren't very substantial to make a difference in every day driving.

For daily purposes, I would be happy with a base model myself, because I'd have the BMW as the fun car. If you are looking to use it as a light track car, getting a Type-S or Si would be more fun, of course.

He really doesn't. I drive 23 miles one way to work everyday and I drive 2009 X5. Love it and comfortable. Sometimes I drive my M3. Not everyone needs a true beater for this distance. Its not that far in reality.

If it was 60 miles one way, thats another story.

05~06 Legacy GT's can be had for 10k or less these days. Those would be my choice for daily driver as they are reliable as hell, comfortable, and reasonably fun to drive. If you are willing to give up the fun part, you can get a 2.5 NA version for less. I also think Outbacks and Foresters are available for that price. Certainly a better option than Hondas if you need more space and comfort.

I picked up '02 Lexus GS300 with about 50k miles(yup, extremely low miles for the model year) a year ago for $6k for a beater and had been very happy with it. Extremely comfortable and reliable. Only problem I had was a door actuator gone bad. I would've bought a Subie but Subaru only started selling cars in Korea around 2009.

that is a great deal (and in korea too where all imports are double). i can fairly get that much for my es300 here and it has twice the miles.

just got back from picking up the RSX. It had 188k miles and been sitting for 9 months brakes were frozen from rust. did an oil change, new brakes pads and rotors slapped some new tires on and drove it 800 miles back to NC. Drove like a champ.
