It's subjective.
I had VRSF catless downpipes installed and I was expecting it to be much louder. I think the car has a perfect, relatively subtle, note to it now. |

I ran the vrsf downpipes with the stock muffler and the flap disconnect mod for a few months before I put a PE exhaust on my old car. The sound was a bit louder and more throaty. The spool from the turbo could be heard but it wasn't super loud. I have a few cold start/rev clips from the different stages but I will need to figure out how to upload them.

On an E90 with the stock resonator the exhaust note is a tad bit louder, definitely noticeable but not outrageous. Spool sound is a good bit louder. There will be more of a difference on E92 and probably your Z4 which doesn't have a stock resonator.

Speaking as a e92 6sp MT with dci, fmic, cobb, and stock catback. I added vrsf dp after having these parts already installed. Sounds great IMO for a daily driver.

The car will be louder. Stock exhaust and DP's is borderline too loud for my liking. Almost sounds like I'm trying too hard.
One thing that I see mentioned occasionally, but not often, is the other sounds that you'll notice such as wastegate noise. The OE catted DP's do a good job of covering up much of this, but it will be in your face once you switch to aftermarket. Particularly so if you're running aged stock turbos. |

While loudness has been spoken for, bear in mind they may make your car sound raspier should you get an aftermarket exhaust, etc. compared to catted or oem downpipes.

I'm going to be installing my catless dp's soon, I'm tuned on stage one, and I'll probably stage stage one for now. I think my clutch is on its last legs. When I do mine I'm going to take before/ after videos on idle, revving, cruising, and WOT 2nd-3rd pulls. The thing I'm most worried about is the drone, but with my fully stock catback, it should be totally fine.

I've got VRSF catless in my 335 with stock exhaust.
Cold start noticeably louder. Nicer tone and a little bit louder when at a warm idle. Under normal accel in the car I can't tell any difference from stock. Under wot definitely louder but not obnoxious. |

Much louder on cold start. After it warms it smooths out to be just a little louder than stock.
I'm adding an x pipe in place of the resonator for a little more grunt. |
