Vanos Recall and Walnut Blast

Hey folks,

For those that understand the work involved in doing the Vanos bolt recall work, is there any synergy in doing a walnut blast of the intake ports while doing that? I am thinking of asking the dealer to do a blast on mine while it is in for the Vanos work and an oil change and if it is easier to do these at the same time I would like to know.

Thanks!

I wouldn't have the dealer do it either. IS Garage in Renton does them now. Ian (the owner) used to be a mechanic at bmw of seattle. He's very good at what he does and charges a fraction of the dealer prices.

I know that doesn't answer your question but it might save you lots of money

Interesting. Thanks for letting me know about that Markus. Did you get a blast done? If you did, how did they look? I am still on the fence about if the N55's suffer the same as the N54's since we have a different PCV system.

I was thinking about complaining about the rough idle and seeing if I could get them to do it under warranty. It would be an easier sell if they are already going to be in there doing the Vanos work.

Not yet but I just talked to him about it. He just recently did one on a N55 and said it was pretty nasty in there. I'll schedule mine with him sometime in the next month probably.

As far as the rough idle goes, the dme update the dealer did for me helped a ton. Not sure if you're on the newest one but if not, it would be worth checking out.

Good to know. How much did he price the service at?

I think I am on the most recent DME version but I will ask. I do worry a little about getting this updated as I have heard stories of folks losing power with the update. I take it you did not see this.

No i haven't noticed any power loss with the dme update. You can see what version you currently have in INPA. I didn't have to pay for the dme update luckily (even though I was already out of warranty)

True, but there is little experience with the N55's with regard to the severity of the buildup. We know the N54's suffer pretty bad buildup but the N55 changed the PCV system significantly which should reduce the amount of oil in the intake tract.

I just had them done. 2011 N55 with 101,000 miles. I'm going to post pics in a separate thread soon. I'll put a link here when done.

Thanks! Those are honestly not too bad for 100k+ miles. Not much flow area restriction unlike what we have seen on the N54's. Still looks like it is a good idea to get done but I would say 100k is about the right timing.

Yeah N55 will still need it done but not as often or as soon as N54. I also get the feeling that the N55 isn't as oil hungry as the N54. Mine never loses any oil even when I bought it and the previous owner hadn't done an oil change in 15k miles...

True. Unless other repairs are needed due to damage caused by VANOS bolts breaking.
