Bimmerguy:

No worries about your Sirius radio. The article (on the first page of this thread) says: "Since the new Interface is compatible with SIRIUS satellite radio as well as the recently introduced HD Radio..."

So, it'll work fine with the Sirius...

Smile New iPod interface and Sirius radio

Thanks for the clarification, Marilyn.

I was confused by the BMW of North America website <www.ipodyourbmw.com>. The popup window refers both to the existing (embarrasing) interface and the new one. The old interface couldn't be used with Sirius radio.

Now I'll just have to see how much it costs. I agree with other posters who say it's difficult to justify nearly $1,000 to enable a $250 mp3 player to integrate with the car :-)

It'll take the place of a cd changer. if you have one.

AUX in and SAT will still work.

I just noticed that they have a disclaimer.... "not compatible with CD Changer and/or SIRIUS Satellite radio". I have Sirius... so I guess I'm screwed. Looks like another BMW half assed engineering feat with their electronics.

Read the press release on the first page, or just scroll up on this page. The disclaimer you're referencing refers to the 1st generation of the iPod adapter. The adapter being released this summer will indeed be compatible with Sirius.

Sorry, I missed those posts (always in such a rush). I hope that is the case. I was thinking how stupid it would be if you couldn't have it with Sirius. So, the remaining TBD question for everyone is going to be - how much will our dealers rape us on installation? The accessory will probably be about $300, but I'll bet the dealers will charge that much or more to install. For that, I'll keep using my air click.

Old thread, but I hate to let misinformation sit uncorrected. There is a big difference between loss of data and loss of content that the OP does not seem to understand.

For example, if the digital coding of a nanosecond of music has 500 zeros in a row (0/1 binary) that music can be coded as 500 zeros written in a row, or as an abbreviation that represents 500 zeros, the words "500 zeros" would be an example, actually. When the data is decoded, the codec knows to actually send "0000000000..." to the DAC. Thus, there is ZERO loss of content, while a certain compression (loss) of raw data bulk. This is the type of compression in ALC, Apple lossless. When played, it is both technically and subjectively indistinguishable from the digital (CD?) original, while conserving some storage space.

Other types of compression, more extreme types like MP3 low bit rates, actually lose content in order to achieve very high compression ratios. They will essentially round-off or average data during encoding. The sound quality drops as the compression ratio increases and there is no good way to restore it. Imagine taking a newspaper image of the Mona Lisa and trying to recreate the original from it- can't happen.

Even untrained listeners, with really good audio gear & set-up & source, can differentiate in the range of 160-320kb. The question is whether or not one cares. As with quality anything, once you learn to appreciate a high-end experience, it's tough to go back.

Compression alogrithmns are written based on that inability, or lack of reference. That, however, does not mean that there is "no loss".
There is loss, the question is whether you can hear it, and/or do you have a reference to know the difference.

I work in video and audio production, thus I am more critical than most are.

Well I have a message for you: Get the Bleep out of Canada if you dont like it and second I spent half my life travelling and working abroad from Europe to the States and think your a fricking joke for how you judge us for all said and done were a pretty easy going bunch. Send me an e-mail I'll help you pack your things.........
