650 mate, but that was as a second car on a 'classic' policy. This is based on 16k miles per annum with business cover around 50%.

I'll try yourcover Paul, cheers!

1700 IS kinda bad really. I mean with a 3k excess I'm basically only insured for a total loss.

Drop the mileage to 4k, don't declare the business: And clock it before every service

That's crazy money for an M3 and I also dont buy into the theory of 'well you're buying an M3 so what does a few extra hundred quid matter?'. Well it does because there's no extra value for that money and insurance companies are taking the bloody piss!

Like M3fast, when I had my first M3 just over 2 years ago it cost me £550 to insure so I'm horrified that when insuring this time on the same car, at the same property, with more NCB, it's gone up 80%! OK, I have 3 points I didn't have before but that's a criminal increase when I haven't made an insurance claim in 12 years!

Still, it must be down to area because your similar age to me (I think?) and you've not mentioned any claims or convictions meaning a price with Admiral of £3k is 3x my price with the same company (who at £990 with a £650 excess are comfortably the cheapest out there).

I agree with your points made. As I said earlier, insurance is a tax and not a dividend... At the end of the year I will have nothing to show for it but 1 more year NCB and a piss take renewal.

I'm.a bit younger than you I think, but not sure. Other than that I have 6 points (2x fixed pens) and 3 years NCB only, which are what will make up the difference in addition to postcode.

your got 6 points already not a master criminal i know but with only 3 ncb your age and postcode things are stacked against you their taking the piss a bit with the quote because they don't really want to insure you

to get a decent quote on a M3 with a reasonable excess your got to be looking 6 ncb and a clean licence

10 years ago i had 3 points for a fixed and was told there was no loading of the premium for your first 3 points doubt that's the same these day's but even then over 3 points made a difference

RagingKileak: I think you have to be realistic, you want to buy one of the most powerful cars available, you live in a high risk area, you have 6 points and not much NCBs....£1700 in that context is really nothing, I use to pay £1500 for insurance on a 1l 106, infact my insurance has never been below £1k for a longtime due to me being young, living in high risk postcodes and buying high insurance group cars.

As much as we all moan about insurance you have to face the facts and accept it, just like we all happy paying the mortagage company £2 back for ever £1 pound we borrow

The M3 is not particularly fast compared to previous cars Matt has driven and insured for significantly less money and with less NCB So that argument whilst true to most people who moan about the costs of motoring doesn't really hold water in this case...

Nah I've been here for years Tim.

Gangzoom - you're right, but so is Mega.

In the nicest possible way, my Golf is a FAR higher risk than the M3 because whilst it isn't quite as fast, it is MUCH less capable of handling the power it runs and takes genuine concentration to drive fast.

Granted, it's not worth as much, but then again both the 135i and 335d WERE worth as much and once modified, were capable of similar speed as the M3, with again, less actual handling and braking capability etc.

I suppose the POINT of all this is that if the quote had come to £1700 from somewhere like Competition Car Insurance (who Ant1985 is with) then it wouldn't be so bad. You get 5 track days included plus a sensible excess etc.... The quote at £1750 stands with some bargain basement del-boy operation from Confused.com that I wouldn't trust to insure a pair of Trainers, let alone a car.

So, when you take into account that fact along with the excess, that's why it's a bad quote.

The closest 'real' quote is the £1900 one from CCI really. That's the best I would ACTUALLY consider at the moment.

I suppose what I want is an insurer like I had with the Porsche. They just listened to what I had to say, considered the fact that I live in a private cul-de-sac which me and my mum built (it has 4 houses on it, all owned by me, mum or someone we sold to) and also took into account my driving history.

Meh. Tis just annoying.... Whoever insures me (sods law being challenged here) has a pretty good chance of banking the cash and not having to do anything for their premium for a year except possibly contend with me switching car early (hehe) but the problem I have is expressing that to them.

I thought CCI would have done a slightly better job than that matt.

I have 4 years no claims 25 and got a e46 m3 and got it for £960 + i think it was 10 or 15 % off for being part of m3cutters.

The track day cover is a bonus if not that's about 250 - 300 for a day.

anyway forget the m3 get a m5 now they are under 23k

Yeah, plus you driving is far worse than mine mate!!

I'm not sure what it is that CCI didn't like, but clearly it's not a goer at this stage lol.

I've just put another call in to somewhere that sounded ok, so let's see how we go.

I doubt trying to insure an M5 would help, except that its cheaper!!!

buying car insurance is the worst time of the year...I would say Elephant has always been the cheapest for me. defo add your father, mother etc, as it always brings down the premium, regardless if they drive it or not.

Hah.... I think that proves my point from an Insurance Company's point of view, lol!!!

Still, I suspect we will get at least one more 'unofficial' meet out of the Golf before the M3 replaces it.

I am still determined.... Yourcover declined to quote, even after insisting on a Tracker. I have another broker looking into it, so fingers crossed.

They said they weren't competitive on M3's and we didn't bother quoting mate.

Garage List
If it helps mate you could leave the M3 on my driveway . If you collect it each day on the way to the office then drop it off on your way home that'll help keep the mileage down too. And, just because I'm a nice guy, I'll take it out over the weekend, just to keep the engine oil warm.

Easy. That's sorted then .

Thanks mate, most is obvious aye, but it's an interesting point about Job, as mine is NEVER right on ANY site....

I usually plump for IT Consultant, so I've no idea whether that makes me a good or bad risk....

Matt, only 3 years NCB? Does this mean you're also having to declare a claim?

If so, this with your 6 points and barely-out-of-nappies age will be why you're at £1,700. In all honesty, I'm amazed you get the Golf insured so cheap!

My missus is 27 years old, has 4 years NCB (only passed her test this long so no claims), clean licence, we don't live in a high risk area and above all, she is a girl (yes, definitely ) yet she still pays over £700 for her standard JCW.

You may have already said <apologies for speed reading> but what would you consider to be a 'reasonable' quote for your circumstances, track days excluded?
Just curious as I'm no points, safe job, boring car, live in a village of the dead and still pay £350 fully comp...

PS Hurry up and buy the bloody car, I wanna see the pics!!

To reiterate for Andy and Westy - its not that 1700 is terribly bad, but that is a shit policy with 'Autonet' who I've never heard of and who started calling me from India relentlessly seconds after the quote went in.

The nearest 'actual' quote was Competition Car Insurance at 1900.

I'd probably be willing to pay 12-1300 for a half decent policy really. That's what would fit in with the 'total' monthly budget I want to pay for changing to an M3.

I've no claims to declare Andy, just did two years on a company car policy which were counted back in 'year 1' when I insured the 335d, but no longer matter.

Does that help chaps?
