This whole subject is a worry, so I thought i would have a look today.
It's dead easy to get in and unscrew the OBD socket and tuck it up out the way, which I suppose would be some deterrent if they were in a real hurry. It's not rocket science to trace it back though. I don't fancy cutting any wires. Does anyone know where you could get a dummy socket to screw in its place, I had a quick look on eBay and nothing jumped out at me. |

OK Here is a review of the OBD port fix provided by the independent garage given by Mart1000 earlier in this thread an which I have now had fitted to my car. You can look earlier in the thread for the garage and I'm not going to describe exactly what they did since the same riff-raff stealing BMWs may also be reading this thread.
Cost: £90 What did they do: Disable the OBD port but provide a means to re-enable it. How long: Took about 1 hour When can they do it: Only Monday-Friday How secure: Reasonable; anyone attempting to steal the car by hacking a key/OBD port would have to spend some time working out what is going on Any affect on car: None that I can see, but the definitive answer will be when it goes back to BMW dealer for the next service and BMW try to re-enable the OBD port to read it. The independent garage did say they disabled the port for the theft fix, then re-enabled it and were able to read from it, but I did not visually verify this myself so I'll have to take their word for it. Visual asthetics: Looks the same as before. |

Im thinking of finding a decent auto electrician who knows what he is doing to move the OBD to somewhere else then put a dummy port back in the original place.
A thief will try the dummy port but have no luck then hopefully give up lol

Let's hope Airbus/Boeing never link their aircraft to the internet even for in flight entertainment. Who knows what would screw up then. |

You can already get Internet on in-flight entertainment.

I think the best deterrent would be a steering wheel lock, for manual car owners you cant beat the handbrake/gear lever lock which is oldskool but works.
As mentioned it would be good if they give up even before trying, another garage told me to swap over the pos and neg on can bus port to cook their equipment when they plugin, dont know if it would work. My mate woke up to find all his windows were wound down and lock tampered with, he reckons they used tools to keep lock on door turned which winds windows down. They didnt take car for some reason and i think sat nav and leather is a turn on for the thieving mofo's |

CANBus relies on EITHER of the 2 communication wires, knocking one of them out will also do nothing for security. Quote:
Updating will depend on how many modules need updating, but will be a maximum of a full work day on OBD, much less if the MOST ring is used as a gateway. The CAS is at no risk of being fried with an update. None at all. The CANBus system is also very sensitive to any wire changes or breaks. Once the wire is broken and soldered, you're going to have endless problems as the solder itself changes the resistance of the part of the wire. Anything do to with switches, or soldering CANBus wires is going to be bad news. |

Seems hiding the port is the best way I wonder would getting a OBD2 port plug and a socket and extending the port so it comes outsomewhere else would affect its operation .
or something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBDII-Male...item3ca0a35758

I intend to reconfigure the pinout on the obd2 port to something rather random. I am making up a cable with a plug and socket that will mirror this config. Sort of like the obd equivalent of a locking wheelnut.

However, as per Simons post, it doesn't sound like the wires like lengthening by means of soldering in lengths of cable.
