Hey everyone,

I have a 335i coupe that just hit 40,000 miles ... slowly reaching that 50,000 mark.

I'm deciding on whether I should get the Platinum Extended Warranty through BMW. I'm not getting the extended Maintenance Warranty as I can do all those little things on my own. For those of you who have gotten it or at least have an opinion about it, is it worth it in the long run to get the Extended Warranty? This package is $3000+ (I forgot the exact amount) and will end in 2014 (6 year mark). Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone has gotten an Extended Warranty that is comparable to BMW's (and cheaper as well) and find it really good, please let me know

thats a personal decision. Regardless of whether its worth the cost now its a gamble you either gamble 3500 or you assume you bought a 55k dollar car that will last 6 years. The choice is yours my friend.

a 328 i'd say forget about it. I guess it depends, can you tell us a little about the history of your 335i? What's been repaired?

I can tell you I have it, and have never used it for the 5 1/2 mos. I've been out of warranty. But the thing is, these cars are designed with the mentality that BMW warrants the repairs, and the maintenance, so there is a level of incompetence built into their service model. I don't want to face that without a warranty. Say it takes 4 visits to fix one issue, which has been my experience, do you want to be paying out of pocket 4X at full retail?

I have never purchased an extended warranty on anything in my life. The 335i was the first.

In the latest Roundel, Mike Miller, their tech guy, says today's BMWs are so complicated and expensive to fix, that he recommends extended warranties. He never used to.

Extended warranty...my old car had aircon failing after 3 years, the cost of repair was $1750, the fuel pump went, $750, the sump was leaking , $500 and Turbo replacement, more than $1250, if I didnt have the warranty, Id be crying...Warranty on the 335....325 or 330 or 328, I wouldnt bother....theyre a lot sturdier...

I bought it +3yr to 70,000 for $3100. I will probably break even but the piece of mind is well worth it. I 2nd that about taking multiple visits to fix a problem. I had a vanos code and told them and they reset it and it didn't reappear for them. Twice this is what they did. Finally the 3rd time after the 50,000 expired they fixed it. They did waive the $50 deductable but still 3 visits for the same problem.

I've got a 328i about to go off of warranty; the cost for the 328 is a bit under $3000. I'm going to pass on the extended warranty. I've owned the car for ~7 months but got the complete vehicle history from the dealer - there were no major issues.
If I have an expensive problem, I will simply get it fixed at an independent garage (I will go to a reputable independent BMW shop after warranty) and then sell the car - it would give me an excuse to buy a Porsche Cayman S. I don't drive my car all that often so I don't expect that I'd get anywhere close to breakeven on an extended warranty.

If I owned a 335, I'd get the extended warranty.

Compare the platinum and gold levels carefully, especially if you don't have nav. If you don't have navigation, only thing extra the platinum covers is the radio.

I"m considering only going for the gold even though I have nav... maybe that's stupid though. Guess it depends on what price they're offering

My 335i coupe is an 08 and the first year was fine, but when 09-10 hit I thought I got a lemon, but I was over mileage by then for them to consider it a lemon. I brought it in consistently in late 2009 early 2010. Here are a couple examples of what I've encountered. My fuel pressure pump went out on me while I was on the freeway, causing my speed to automatically drop and the car behind me nearly rear ended me. I also had a consistent issue where in the morning or when my engine is cold, my car wouldn't gowhen I let go of the break, but it would jerk into "gear" and go 2 seconds later as if I let go of the clutch too early (I have an automatic though).

All those things have been fixed. As of right now, later 2010-2011, I haven't brought it in for any other reason except for pit stops and oil changes.

But I do agree with some of the other posts that it's a personal decision and that BMW's are made studier now a days... but a BMW is still a BMW (you know the deal). I think I'm going to get it to play it safe. Thanks!
