I want a newer car that is still very fast, but more refined, something that can be driven in the winter (in chicgao) and is more everyday. the 335 fits the bill, i know it will cost a few grand a yr to maintain but i read the horror stories online and ponder in my head whether il be buying one or not.
Used twins that still work fine can be had for little cash and new you can get for like $650 with a core. You can also go upgraded for around $3500

Just make sure you buy an extended warranty BC if I hadn't I would be out thousands and thousands of dollars

New turbos will only run you $2500 to $3500 these days at an indy shop. Mine were replaced the last week of warranty (at 45k). I have 49k on the car now and plan to keep to for a while... The only thing thy scares me on the car is the electronics. Everything else seems pretty straight forward.

The key with these cars seems to be getting a "good one." be sure to review service records prior to buying. Good luck and enjoy! I love mine. No regrets at all

if you are really concerned about reliability, get an Infiniti. Same car, just not as good but more reliable.

I'm guessing replacing the turbos would only run around 1500 if you do it yourself? They run around $600 a piece with a $100 core from Tischer.

EDIT: just read previous post that was this same comment. whoops

well it seems the transmissions hold out well. no one has mentioned that, in all my searches thats never been an issue.

I plan to upgrade the FMIC and oil cooler right when i get the car. it will see light track duty, maybe the 1/4 mile once a yr as well.

I could do the twins with my buddy as long as we dont need to much BMW specific equipment. which with the e90/92 you cant do nearly as much diy compared to a e46. but i cant afford a e46 m3 so thats not even really an option.

Oh yeah,
My PCV valve was shot and my intake was all blocked up.

~50$ for a Rob Beck upgraded PCV + the BMS Catch Can + ~400$ valve cleaning bud.

and that sh!t is never cheap to fix.... DIY or not, parts cost quite a bit.

Id get a 06 330i sedan with the 255hp I6 but even with all the worthwhile mods its slower than a 335 stock.

I had a 07 335i e90 w/ 120k+ miles ('06 production) that I finally traded... JB4 Tune since 110k... I was hoping to keep but it needed too much to be done to it. I had Route 66 extended warranty. Never again!!! They e'ffin suck and didn't wanted to cover some of the repairs below, buyers BEWARE!!! I had really bad luck with this car; I got the car with about 55k miles...

***My recommendation to you would be getting a lower mile 335i unless your buddy has good exp. with 335's and/or not scared to go under the hood and do things... BMW req alot of speciality tools as well as a BMW scanner... Regular OBD scanner are useless for 335's

Overall I loved the car and didn't want to let it go, but now I love my LCI better
- 2 water pumps replaced (around 80k and 100k)
- Exhaust Vanos replaced (92k)
- All Boost hose replaced (92k - for boost leak)
- 3 Thermostat replaced + programming (70k, 80, 100k)
- 2 HPFP dealership replaced (88k, 92k)
- Pre Cat O2 sensors replaced (112k)
- Low Pressure Fuel sensor (120k)
- Faulty AHL module
- Oil leaks from Engine pan, Tranny and Differential
I think I covered everything

Last edited by ROB M3; 10-18-2012 at 11:45 PM.. Reason: Forgot to mention that It had a jerky shift(auto) as well, probly because of the Tranny leak, who knows???

im on my first bmw....it has approx 99k touching 100...i get the 29dc code (fuel pump i think) aside that the car is fine (although not that this is a small problem lol)....ive only owned the car the last 2-3000 miles though....

i think how the car has been looked after in the past will play a major role on future of these cars....i tend to find everything costs slightly much more than some other cars but if you use the forums and information correctly it really does help keep costs down.lol.

the costs do sneak up on you though haha.

I have an early model 2007 with 97500. Had replace hpfp like usual, had a trans leak at 40k and just did water pump/ thermostat. More as preventative they didn't go out. I also did coils and plugs. But that's it. Car is a dd bone stock. Getting ready to do 100k trans service and go another 100k.
