Hi all,

I am guessing this subject has been raised before but my 335d suddenly lost power the other day. I have extended warranty on the car fully comprehensive but they saying that the vacuum hose is not covered under the warranty. However i have had this part changed before under warrenty as i had a similar problem when i 1st purchased the car. The BMW emergency service said that it could be the actuator that is gone on the small turbo however i still need to pay for the hoses before they check the actuator. surely if the actuator is faultly and is the problem that all hoses and everything else should be covered, seeing as the hoses have only been replaced less than a year ago.

I have no boost till 2500 rpm the i have full boost when the large turbo kicks in.

Any help be appreciated kind of stumped with all this..

Hi,

My cousin had exactly the same issue on his 335d, I spoke to him today and he sorted this as there was a loose connection on the manifold I think that monitors boost pressure.

Check that and let us know.

thank Danzo BMW are a joke at times u pay all this for warranty at least give me something for good will.. but they just try to scam money out of us.. Anyway i check it out speak to them tomorrow.

Ive had the same problem in the past and has been a combination of the below

First thing first speak to BMW and ask them what error codes were showing up - most likely they will tell you where to go and say no but it helps knowing what fault code is present so it helps pin point as to where to look.

normally if there is no boost upt 2.5k then most likely the actuators to the small turbo is at fault as these tend to sieze due to the heat - there is a common fault on the 35d with the actuators. Now if BMW are saying its a vac hose then that could to affect boost. If you are handy you can check yourself by removing the engine cover. the vac hose do perish over time due to heat. A local garage will be able to replace these or again if you are handy you can do them yourself. Unfortunatly BMW warranty does not cover vac hoses but when my actuators were replaced one of the hoses had split and BMW did replace them out of goodwill (does depend on how nice the dealer is)

My feeling is one of the actuators has gone hence no boost but again could be avac hose.

Another thing to check would be the Manifold Absolute pressure which is located on the inlet manifold (near cylinder number 5). I think BMW made this a weak point as the the sensor is held in with a rubber grommet and when you wiggle it does feel loose. I would take the sensor out, clean it with electrical contact spray and refit - generally if this sensor fails it tends to cause hesitancy at low revs rather than no boost at low revs

If you have a code reade/someone is local/garage then I would try to read the code first as it will give you an indication whether it is the actuator to the small turbo

What year/milege is the car?

They stick and fail, common fault and simple fix.

Get them to re-do the vac lines too - Birds Auto will do a top job

At a guess your car is on about 50-70k, at least 3 years old.

briers i read your post you said they replaced under warranty which dealer you go too?

guys any news on how much i should be paying for these hoses just to be replaced they quoting £350 and if they need to remove manifold around £530 bit excessive Ive spoken to mistryn he said 100-150 with the amount im paying. im wondering if they trying to get the cost of a new actuator and replace that as well as i cannot see it then pass it off as the hoses did need replacing yet charged me for the actuator as well knowing in mind that i will kick up a fuss if it proves that the hoses was not faulty then having to do the work again.

hoses cost me £45

Iirc I paid £160 for both pressure converters and the new mounting bracket. The design has changed on them and the pitch of the holes is different hence needing a new mounting bracket too

go to gsf for vac hose i think it was £3/metre exactly the same one as BMW but fraction of the price - same rubber hose with cotton braiding

cheers guys.. well i have had words with the dealer and they are truly trying to give me fob off stories cause they saying now cause of the age of the car and millage this as happend. I contested it and said that this fault has happened to car younger than my car and that there is defo a design fault in this and some people have had this changed out of good will.. we will see what they say tomorrow BMW uk are now properly investigating this matter..

they now having to change 2x pressure converter sensors pressure pump and other bits no mention of actuators yet but i keep you guys posted.. extended warranty kicking in hopefully i get some good will for my hoses as i still got to pay for them..

good to hear that I doubt very much so it was the vac hoses that were the main issue. My guess is after 70k the vac hoses may have looked perished (the outer cotton braiding breaking up) but the actual hose should be ok

Which dealer did you take it to? I would have suggested if you had no joy with that particular dealer to try another dealer

also you will be able to see the vac hoses as to what runs where so take a print out of the above and explain that if the vac hoses need to be replaced pin point which one they need to replace and only get that replaced if you do end up having to pay and get the other vac hoses done elsehwereif they need doing
