What does "set positioning motor" in 330xi do?

Hey guys I have an 2006 330xi can anyone school me what does the "set positioning motor" on the transfer case do? especially on manual transmission cars. Will it effect how the manual trans shifts if it goes bad?

it's #13 in the diagram

I found this brief description:

Used to proportion front/rear wheel torque

From what I have been reading, the "all wheel drive" system constantly adjusts for the best overall performance and traction, ect...this sounds like a player in that category.

thanks for reply, I could see this contributing to my hard shifting problem on a manual trans at higher RPM, I just wanted to make sure before pulling the trigger on a $400 part

that part has nothing to du whit hard shifting. it direkts power between the front and back wheels (from 100% back to 50-50% front and back)
and it is mounted to the transfear case and not the gearbox.

if you have shifting problems at high rpm i say check your clutch.
a clutch that donīt fully dissengage make for hard shifting.

perhapse as simple as change your break/clutchfluid (same container)
and blead your clutch at the slave cylinder.

That's what I thought initially, so I have already bled the clutch at the slave and it didn't make a difference. I'm going to check the input cylinder next, see if it's leaking. I'm going to buy a new slave if I don't see any obvious issues with the input cylinder

thanks

if you press the clutch down and release it, ware does the clutch engage? pedal high or low?
when did the problem start? miles on car?

The clutch engages pretty high, maybe more than halfway up. I tried several things yesterday, I pressed the clutch while driving in 3rd gear without letting go the throttle and the rpm just shoots right up like you put the car in neutral. I also revved the car standing still with the clutch pressed all the way in and the car didn't move.

I do have the 4x4 & brake light on, car have around 50k

thanks

huh,,, my set positioning motor gave in at about 50 k.
made the 4x4 and breaklight come on. also made the car 100% rear weel drive.
there are a couple of fuses that you can check that can make that light come on as well. (behind the glovebox)

but still cant see the connection for the clutch problem and the 4x4 light or the set positioning motor.

coming from a dsm eagle talon whit a act clutch i messed around quite alot whit clutches not dissengageing.
a clutch that overheats can get "wavey" and cause the space between the preassure plate and the flyweel to get to small. this is hard to notice under normal driving. but high rpm shifting is very sensitive for clutch drag.

not saying that this is your problem...
but do you know when the it started to shift hard? at the same time that the 4x4 light came on?

wrong oil in the gearbox make a world of difference if you by chance have had it changed lately.
