3-series GT (gran turismo) confirmed for production
Also reported on homepage.
MUNICH, Germany — BMW has confirmed its plans for a 3 Series hatch called the 335i Gran Turismo, which follows in the footsteps of its bigger relative — the 2011 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. It's slated to hit the streets in 2011. Like 5 Series GT, the 335i GT will carry a price premium, settling in between the standard 3 Series and 5 Series. It is meant to rival Audi's A4 Avant lineup as well as the new Q3 SUV, which is an interesting point considering the compact X1 crossover is similar in size to the 335i and already set to come to the States in 2011. With comparable models like the X1 and 5 Series GT, BMW offers proof that a global recession is not hindering its production plans: "We haven't cancelled the crossover of the 3 Series, as it is considered a volume builder with which we can earn good money," said BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer. Like the 5 Series Gran Turismo first shown at this year's Geneva auto show, the 3 Series GT will have a unique two-stage tailgate, giving owners the option of opening just a small part of the trunk or the complete tailgate (including the rear window) if more space is desired. Remember, BMW does sell a wagon version of the 3 Series in the U.S., so the Gran Turismo will bring the model's body style count to five (coupe, convertible, sedan, wagon and the GT five-door). Sources also tell us that two seating configurations will be offered, a four-seat or a more practical five-seat setup, and BMW's latest turbo and diesel engines will be offered. As far as we know no M3 version is planned. -- http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...cleId=151786#4 ** THESE PICS ARE ONLY PHOTOSHOPS BASED ON 5-SERIES GT |

I think the 3er GT will be taller. The seating positions will be higher and it will focus more on comfort, so the interior volume would have to be jacked up and the roofline as well. Those pics are ugly, and I don't expect the real thing to woo me, but it shouldn't look that bad.

Can someone please tell BMW these look BAD. The entire concept is very 80's, it's been done and failed.

Not really feeling that. (Based on photochops.) Not really sure which nitch they are going for? As stated above, the e91 already exists. Unless BMW is trying to compete with the CLS or A7

That Citation is sweet! My old high school had three of them back in the day for driver's ed.
That being said, BMW is seriously pissing me off with their new cars. This GT crap is horrible, the move to a four cylinder for the U.S. market is deplorable and the thought of bringing a hatchback is scaring me as well. I bought a BMW not only for the performance, but also because of the exclusivity and luxury image of the brand. This ridiculous GT car, the fact that it looks like a Citation and the threat of a hatchback is akin to a mobile home moving in to my neighborhood. My 'value' is going down in my car with this 'mass-market appeal' campaign BMW is on. I understand the need for profit, customer expansion and product development, but this stuff is getting ridiculous. The 1-series was bad enough, why not just bring back the 318ti? Sorry to go on a rant, but the thought of seeing this 3-series GT pic that looks like a Citation pissed me off.

Wow, the new X3 will have to elbow its brothers and sisters aside to get some shelf space...

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!
BMW is doomed! BMW as a performance-driven company is doomed! BMW is the next Saturn, AMC, Hyundai, Kia, (insert any soccer-mom inspired company here)! I say this because my wife, who is not impressed with my 335i, who drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and loves American muscle cars more than European performance vehicles said when she saw the 3-series GT pic above "I absolutely love it". If it wasn't only the 2nd of July, Id've beat her, but in Arkansaw, we only get to beat our wives once a month, and it's too early in the month to waste a good beating over a picture.

Looks like X6 portioned down to a 3 series and lowered. UGLY IMO. Funny thing is that BMW will probably sell the GT in 335i form, but to this day refuses to sell their E91's with as a 335.
