Thats pre-lci and lci right? know if its possible to retrofit the lci paddles onto a prelci car?

@ MrRetep: yes it's possible to retrofit them but the LCI's have to be modded to function. Also note that only certain steering wheels are compatible with certain paddles. The sports, M-Tech wheels are compatible with SSG and SMG LCI. the M wheel is only compatible with SMG pre-LCI paddles.

@ everyone else: Doesn't matter which version. I'm more interested in the actual behavior When you have the car in D and operate the paddle, what exactly happens on the display and on the baseplate? Does the baseplate illuminate D and DS or just D or just DS? Also, how many seconds does it take for the transmission to shift back into normal D if the paddle is operated once in D mode?

Pictures or even better a quick video would be greatly appreciated

Dual function paddles are the ones I have, they come in handy if ever you want to drive with one hand around the city!

Not sure. I think the N54s (excluding the 1 series & DCT 335is) got the dual function paddles. The N55 all got the single function paddles.

If I'm on the highway & just click downshift, it goes M5. While the car is still in "D", it won't hold the gear as long as if I was in DS. If I just cruise around & don't hammer it, it'll usually switch back after 10-20 seconds (depends on driving behavior)

My 07 335 didnt come with any paddles so i retrofited the M3 ones... Awesome mod imo

ok but lets say you're just sitting still and the shifter is in D. then you tap the paddle and M1 or M2 shows.. how long does it exactly take in seconds until it switches automatically back into D. Also, what happens with the baseplate where P, R, N, D, DS is displayed by the shifter. For the LEDs, does DS only, D only or do both D and DS light up?

Same idea. If you drive more aggressively, it'll hold the Mx longer. If you ease off the stop, then it'll go back to D after it shifts into the next gear.

When it's in DS, the only light on the opposite side of the (I guess the DS light) is illuminated.

I'm not totally sure what you're after with this, but the amount of time the transmission will stay in "M" (manual) mode with the shifter still in the "D" position is variable as far as I know. My recommendation is to move the shifter over to the manual gate if you want to use the paddles. If I don't do that, my car will sometimes change back to the regular shift program very quickly.

As for the lights on the shifter bezel, I don't think they change if you just click a paddle in the regular "D" position. I guess I've never paid much attention on either of the E90s I've had as far as that goes.

Oh, and I replaced my original steering wheel with an M3 DCT wheel with the M3 paddles. Makes the car so much better.....

i appreciate all the feedback but would it be possible for someone to actually test and answer the specific question i had

1. Just sitting still and the shifter is in D, tap the paddle and M1 or M2 shows.. how long does it exactly take in seconds until it switches automatically back into D.

2. What happens with the baseplate where P, R, N, D, DS is displayed by the shifter. For the LEDs, does DS only, D only or do both D and DS light up during the procedure from 1?

I assume this would take a max of 1 minute to test for someone that has the paddle shifters

I already answered them, but the short version is there is NO specific time frame -- it completely depends on how you're driving. IF you're driving nice, it'll go back faster then if you're driving aggressive.

When it's in DS, only the DS is illuminated. When it's in D, only D is illuminated
