Dumb train question

I can't quite believe it but I need to use public transport tomorrow.......

I haven't used a train for donkeys, can you just pay on the train now and purchase a ticket before?

Classic, I posted a similar thread recently, there was a chap in a hat on the train I got with a bizarre contraption around his neck, I reckon he's the man to dodge

If the rules are the same down the road as they are up here, you pay top price if you pay on the train after getting on at a station where there is ticket machines.

You don't get cheap day return deals etc.

Any conductor seems to be happy with the queue was too long and lets you off this one time.
