I heard this today when I checked with my insurance company - no exclusions. but what I forgot to ask is if the event is held outside NC does the coverage still apply? reason I need to know is because I will be attending another HPDE at Road Atlanta.

The way I interpreted it is that if there are no exclusions and my coverage is nation wide than I don't see it as being any different than getting into an accident anywhere else. I spoke to a car enthusiast over on NCeuro, who is an insurance broker, and he said that I would be covered at VIR so I would think that you would be fine, but you could always call up your insurance agency and double check. When I tried calling up Geico to get confirmation on this they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about so I just had them send me a copy of my policy and I couldn't find any exclusions on it. This is probably the greatest law NC has ever conceived.

I did just check with Jeff Hall and he confirmed this to me! Also confirmed with my insurance carrier so I am all set to go whether the track is in NC, SC or GA!!!

Finally a law that works for it's people! who would have figured it.....btw, good luck at VIR. I will try to hit VIR either end of the year or next spring. Looks like lost of fun, I had to pick Road Atlanta over VIR for my July 4th weekend - RA is sick! I did CMP two weeks ago and had a close call BUT learned tons of do's and don'ts so I feel more prepared for RA.

This is great news and something I have always been concerned about. I had no idea the state had that much power over our insurance companies. Thanks for the info guys!

Just a heads-up to some of you - not all policies exclude autocross or HPDE; that will vary from carrier to carrier and state to state. Good to read your policy.

I would be interested in getting a specimen copy of a policy from one of you NC guys if you could post a pdf. No exclusions at all just, to me, seems to good to be true. That potentially gives coverage for intentional acts, like me ramming your car because I'm pissed at you, amongst other things.

This would suck... how can BMW be the ultimate driving machine when we're not allowed to enjoy its ultimateness?

Just cover (or remove) your plates at the track and don't post pics with your plates in them and you'll be fine...

Enjoy to your heart's content. Just don't expect BMW to honor a warranty for a road car that has been used on the track.

Your right, as long as you are adequately deceptive, you will be fine.

I don't know where you got your info, but my SA knew I was taking my car to the track. He even did the inspection form for me. I specifically asked about the warranty too and it wasn't a problem. My car was less than a year old when I first took it.

I got my information from the warranty. You were given a copy, read it.

I track my car constantly.....but never in a competitive timed event.

Warranty fully valid.

ditto here - my BMW SA tracks his 335 as well, and has given me a bunch of tips on set up for the track. I've gotten my car "teched" each time at the dealership, as it has corresponded to a service appt

The atmosphere at the dealership seems to be one of "car enthusiast", which is refreshingly different from the Lexus dealer across the street

Yep, same with ours. I think the difference may be the "non-timed event".

I believe that is the chief qualifier. After all, BMWCCA has track events all the time and BMW encourages membership.

Buy a Porsche-their warranty is good unless the claim arose from a breakdown during or caused by competition.
BMW are only interested in getting the car past the warranty period with as little outlay as possible.

I am continully amazed by the number of people on this forum who express "authoritative" opinions without having bothered to read anything.
Competitive means timed or measured distance. HPDE or track days don't fall into this category, althought given the oil temperature issue, I would not be surprised to see BMW try to eliminate warranty coverage on this as well in future .
