I have been reading these boards for quite some time and since owning a BMW and wanting to get a new camera, I thought this would be the place to come. I have done countless searches, read reviews from other websites and I am wanting the forum's thoughts on the Nikon D90. I don't know too much about photography, but thought the D90 (from what I have read) would be a good camera to start. I thought about the D60, but everyone and every website says the D90 has much more capability, etc. Can anyone give me some honest feedback about the D90? Any particular website dedicated to information and what all the terminology is?

Any recommended books I could buy as well?

We have the D90 and the D300 and both work pretty much the same. The D90 at less than half the price is an unbelievable bargain.

I would go with the D5000 which just came out which has almost all the features of the D90 but the price is not as steep...I also contemplated between the D90, but sure enough the D5000 just came out and had everything I needed but not the steep price of the D90

if my understanding is correct, the diff between the D5000 and the D90 is that the D90 offers the movie capability, (which isnt really a big deal to me). Once again, I will state I am new at this....so are the diff lenses that are available from Nikon, are they interchangeable for diff models? Anyways guys, thanks for the help. I am getting married next month and we are going to the St Maarten for our honeymoon, so I would love to take some great pics to highlite the occasion!

Both the D90 & D5000 offer movies at 720p. But note that AUTOFOCUS is NOT available when shooting a movie on both! The 5000 has the tilting screen.

The D90 is a great camera, but frankly might be overwhelming if you are just getting into it. There are a lot of features it offer that you may never even use.

I would recommend starting with a D60 off Craigslist and see how much you really want to get into the hobby. Great pictures can be taken with any camera, its just the "toys" that go along with them. The Megapixels are roughly the same (10 v 12) so you can still have a good sized image to crop.

Honestly, the best money is spent buying great glass (lenses). They make the picture more than the camera itself.

I had a D40 for years and really loved it, once I got the lenses I wanted I moved up to the D90, which I find to be a great camera as well.

As far as Canon/Nikon, both are good companies, but I say buy what your friends have, that way you can borrow their lenses if you need to. And speaking of lenses, these things can get crazy expensive, but you can rent them cheap and try them out. I used rentglass.com and found it was a great way to find out which lenses I wanted to blow my money on.

I love my D90. I find the D60 and 5000 too small. Also, the D90 had a built in auto focus so you can use alot more lenses.

basically its like a d80 with a video capabilities that's not that great. Like the D80, you can use more lenses with the d90 though.

If you're just getting into photography start with the Nikon D90. I started with a D60 and hated how I couldn't use AF lenses with auto focus because it lacked the in-body AF motor. I upgraded to the D300 within 6 months of owning the D60 (a big mistake, cause I could have just gotten the D90). The D90, though, will drive both AF and AF-S lenses. If I were you, go for it. Don't waste your time with the D40/D60 because you know you'll want to use AF lenses someday!

Don't get me wrong though...the D40/D60 are nice pocket-DSLRs! If you plan on staying with AF-S lenses, then reconsider. The money you save by going with a D40/D60 can be used on much better lenses (17-55mm f/2.8!!!)

if you have the money, don't bother with the D60, just get the D90 and deal with it's complexity. given time, you'll know what you'll be doing with it anyway.

the only reason i got the D40 was money. i wasn't willing to spill that amount of cash for a hobby i wasn't sure i'd like. so i got the D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens, a couple months later i snagged the 55-200mm and 35mm both for $200 each. i seem to like it so far, so if things go well for another couple of month, i'll upgrade to the D90.

thanks for all the input guys. You have been great. I was thinking of the D90 with the 18-105mm lens, and at the same time buying the 55-200mm lens. once again, this will be my first DSLR, so I apologize if I sound like a noob. Does the flash that the camera comes with good enough? Or do I need an external flash like the sb600? One other question, do the filters make a big diff? One guy said they protect the end of the lens which I like, but will it make the picture noticeably clearer? or what exactly will the filter filter out? thanks again for all the help!!

I have not noticed UV filters to alter the photos you take besides giving you bad lens flares, ghosting, and reflections. I only use them to protect the lens. That's about it.

There are other filters that will change your photo, though, like circular polarizers and gradient filters.

The flash on the D90 itself should only be used for fill-flash when your subject is back-lit, creating a silhouette. The SB-600 will always be better than the on-camera flash, as it has greater power and range and can be tilted in such a way that will allow you to indirectly light up a subject by bouncing light from a wall or ceiling. With the D90 you can also control the SB-600 wirelessly with the pop-up flash. This allows you to pull off the flash from your camera and control the flash off-camera so you can position the light source differently.

What do you guys think? I couldn't find a better deal anywhere online. Also, I was thinking of taking a photoshop class from the local community college, any thoughts on that? Have you taken any classes like that in the past? helpful? beneficial?

I would reccomned not getting the kit lens (18-105) and instead get the 18-55. I read bad things about the 18-105 shutting off the camera.

be wary of the premade "kits" you see posted. heres a few reasons:

1) UV filter they give you is junk most likely, why put cheap glass on top of your good glass? Your lens is only as good as the weakest link
----Get B+W filters for your lenses (not cheap, but the best)
----www.hvstar.net has them cheaper, but you'll wait a week to receive it since it comes from HK

2) they are packaging in two lenses which are O.K, but if youre willing to spend 2k, you could do better
---D90+18-200 VR lens is a great starter combo imo, one pretty damn good lens, and no need to swap for most scenes, should run you notably less than 2k in total, and if you want to add a particular lens after that, you can always do that

3) skip the training unless you really want it, not a reason to buy into a package


as far as photoshop class, it could be neat, but I guess you should make sure the focus of the class is photography vs just general photoshop usage. Theres a good website called http://www.good-tutorials.com/ which can probably give you a lot of ideas with photoshop, and toying around with adobe lightroom is always a great help as well since you can get a real good feel for what you can do to your shots in a more basic interface

thanks vudoo for the insight. It's a "package" from best buy, but still could not find a better deal online. I will price out the D90 body only and that lens. I read good things about the 70-300mm lens, but will look into more. Thanks again for all the help.
